Budget Update

On Sunday, June 15, the California Legislature passed its 2014-15 budget package, including the budget bill and companion "trailer bills." The budget package reflects negotiations between the Governor and the Legislature, adoption of the Governor's more conservative revenue estimates, and a few additional investments in programs and services for California's poorest residents. The budget package maintains the Governor's identified priorities of paying down state debt and setting aside a rainy day fund.

CFPA maintains that as state revenues increase, current and future budgets should focus not just on shrewd savings and debt repayment, but also on investments in vital public programs that help struggling Californians get back on their feet. While this budget package takes steps in the right direction, CFPA continues to urge the Governor and the Legislature to do more to reduce the number of Californians living in poverty and experiencing food insecurity.
