NUTRITION AND CANCER

Resources for Cancer Patients

When you have cancer, it can be a challenge to eat well and get the nutrition you need. It is important to find ways to maintain a healthy weight and eat nutritious foods. Below are a few resources that can help you develop a plan for your nutritional needs:

  • The National Cancer Institute - Eating Hints: Before, During and After Cancer Treatment. Click here to read.

  • Cancer.net - Nutrition Recommendations During and After Treatment.

  • Rebecca Katz, author of five cookbooks and two that address cancer; The Cancer-Fighting Kitchen and One Bite at a Time. Her "Magic Mineral Broth" recipe is legendary. Both healing and nutritious for someone going through chemotherapy. You can find all her books in your public library, she also posts recipes online. Click here to read more about Rebecca Katz.

Because everyone is different, there is no way to know if you will have problems with eating and, if so, how bad they will be. You may have just a few issues or none at all -- it all depends on the type of cancer you have, where it is in your body, what kind of treatment you have, and how long treatment lasts. During treatment, there are many helpful medicines and other ways to manage eating problems. This is why it's critical that you reach out to your doctor, nurse or dietician if you are having any issues. They can also help set expectations for which side effects you may feel and ways to manage them.
