ALL SOULS’ DAY
All Souls' Day, November 2, is a time of prayer and remembrance for our departed loved ones. We invite you to honor deceased relatives and friends by sharing their names for Father Jim Sullivan to include during prayers on this special day. Please submit names by October 28, including class year for deceased alumni.
Grant them eternal rest, o Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. Rest in peace.

ROBOTICS SETS SIGHTS HIGH
O’Dowd students lead nearly 60 diverse clubs, based on a variety of interests, passions, and shared experiences. Last spring, the Robotics Club took 1st place at the 2022 Pioneers in Engineering Competition, hosted by UC Berkeley. “The competition was exhilarating,” said club president Julian Barbera ’23. ‘We can't wait to compete again!” The club is gearing up for another great year of creative engineering.

ALUM EARNS MEDICAL SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP
Sebastian Hurtado '15 is one of 50 students out of 11,000 applicants to receive a full-ride scholarship to the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine. Kaiser started the medical school in 2020 and is providing full tuition support to all students in the first five graduating classes. While at O’Dowd, Sebastian pursued a number of science courses, including Biology and Advanced Placement Environmental Science. “I had extraordinary teachers at O’Dowd,” shares Sebastian. “They brought the sciences to life for me.”

SPIRIT WEEK DEEPENS DRAGON PRIDE!
Class cheers, theme days, class olympics, and night rallies mean one thing - O’Dowd’s infamous spirit week is here! Students kicked off the week with Homecoming Dance, and tomorrow night is our Homecoming Football Game, which includes a social for 21+ attendees, hosted by President J.D. Childs and Dragon Parents & Guardians. “No matter when you attended O’Dowd, spirit week is the thread that connects us all,” reflects Starr Gray ’98, Director of Student Activities. SCIENCE & ART AT O'DOWD
When artist Hannah Perrine Mode set out to create her large scale installation, Atlas (after Anna), for the Center for Environmental Studies, she wanted the message to come alive for O’Dowd students. This month, she led a series of interdisciplinary workshops guiding students to explore the natural environment through both art and science. "For students interested in creative ways to pursue environmental work, this opened their eyes to new possibilities," says Hannah. Learn more.

INSIDE THE CATHOLIC LITURGY
This month, Fr. Leo led a series of teaching masses in our chapel. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn more about the different prayers and rituals of the liturgy, and for everyone, no matter their faith, to practice finding God in all things. “I appreciated how our students embraced these teaching masses,” says Fr. Leo. “Our students demonstrated a real willingness to learn with an open mind.” Read more.

NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SEMIFINALISTS
Ajani Barrow ’23, Annabel Long ’23, and Catie Long ’23 qualified for the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. These Dragons will compete against more than 16,000 students for the chance at 7,250 scholarships totaling $28 million.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS WEEK
For Health and Wellness Week, students participated in a variety of stress-relieving activities, and also attended a short presentation with the Sam Taylor Foundation, a local nonprofit founded in memory of a class of 2017 alumnus that works with schools to support conversations about mental health. Our EcoLeaders and Creation Care Team invite all students, families, and alumni to our annual Fall Harvest Festival in the Living Lab! Featuring a performance by the O’Dowd Band, pumpkin carving, face painting, and a petting zoo, everyone is guaranteed to have a great time! This is a family friendly event and costumes are strongly encouraged!

DAMARA FREDETTE ’88 was the recipient of the 2022 Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York’s Doris S. Hoffman Outstanding New Lawyer Award in recognition of her outstanding achievements within the profession and outstanding contributions within the WBASNY members community.

HILLARY NAKANO ’07 was selected by the California Lawyers Association for the New Lawyer of the Year Award in Workers’ Compensation. The selection pool included every attorney in California that has practiced workers’ compensation for 5 years or less.

ANDY CARLSON ’11 starred in the movie Movers Ultimate, a comedy about two best friends who get off work in time to go to their ten year reunion and reconnect with the girls that got away.

JASIYA BROWN ’21 is a current cheerleader for the Super Bowl Champions Los Angeles Rams. In between rehearsals and game day performances, she balances class as a 2nd year student at CSULB.

Join us for a night of celebration! Tickets for the 2022 Transforming Lives Dinner are on sale now until October 23! The evening includes a welcome reception, sit down dinner in the Knauss Family Gymnasium, and a paddle raise to support the tuition assistance program. Together we will ensure that nearly 30% of students can continue to experience all O’Dowd has to offer.
