Finding God in All Things

November 2025

Dear Dragon Community,

This Thanksgiving, as we celebrate 75 years of Bishop O’Dowd High School, I am filled with gratitude for all of you - faculty and staff, students, alumni, families, and friends - who make this community so extraordinary. For 75 years, O’Dowd has been a place where faith, learning, leadership, and love come together, shaping generations of students who go on to serve and lead with purpose.

In this season, I reflect with special gratitude on the generosity and spirit of service that have defined O’Dowd from the beginning. From the mission drives and dollar days of the 1950s and ’60s to today’s student-led service projects, our community has long stood with those most in need. That same commitment shines each November at our Transforming Lives Dinner, when we come together in support of tuition assistance—ensuring that 30% of our students have a financial bridge to the power of an O’Dowd education. This generosity is a living expression of our faith and mission, and one of the most tangible ways we transform lives.

As we count our blessings this Thanksgiving, I am deeply grateful for the compassion and community that have sustained O’Dowd for 75 years. I know that in the years ahead, we will continue to see our students and alumni lead with courage, purpose, and heart - building a more just and hopeful world.

I wish you peace, joy, and countless reasons to give thanks.

With gratitude,

 Kim Walsh

 President, Bishop O’Dowd High School

ALUM PUBLISHES ARTICLE IN USC NEWSPAPER

Omar Mejia ’25 published his first article as a student journalist with USC Annenberg Media. His article focused on the Supreme Court's recent Noem v. Vasquez Perdomo decision, which legalized racial profiling and how a Los Angeles community organization, Tri-County Collaborative, has a game plan to provide vulnerable population with social services and civic engagement resources. Omar was a student speaker at last year’s Transforming Lives Dinner, where he shared his passion for journalism and social justice.

FALL SPORTS ROUND-UP

Competitive games and lively student sections led to a fierce sports season this fall. “We had four teams earn the West Alameda County Conference league championship title this fall, and seven teams compete in the North Coast Section Playoffs,” shares Carlos Reed, Director of Athletics. Read our Fall Sports Round-Up and see how the teams did this season!

DEBATE TEAM ON THE RISE

Speech & Debate has expanded its novice team this year, supported each week by strong varsity leadership. While competing in parliamentary debate, students have focused on developing quick thinking, clear communication, and confident teamwork. “Debate introduced me to my first friends at O’Dowd, and my teammates encouraged me to be myself,” shares Myles Garadis ’27.

OFRENDA

Earlier this month our Latinos Unidos build a beautiful ofrenda in Hurley Hall for our community to place photos of those who have passed away. Over 100 photos and names were added to the altar as we celebrated All Souls Day and Dia de Los Muertos. Together, we remembered their life, love, and impact.

GEOMETRY IN THE WILD

Did you know that triangles are not only studied in Geometry but are also used in construction, engineering, navigation, computer graphics, GPS and mapping, art and design, and Physics? Our 9th graders explored the side, angle relationships, and looked for patterns.

FALL MUSICAL - LITTLE SHOP, BIG SCREAMS

This fall, audiences stepped into the funny and frightful world of Skid Row as O’Dowd Theater brought the beloved musical Little Shop of Horrors to life, a thrilling tale of Seymour, a timid florist who discovers and raises a talking, bloodthirsty houseplant named Audrey II. The cast performed seven performances to sell-out crowds.

COLLEGIATE COMMITMENT FOR STUDENT ATHLETES
