St. Patrick
Feast Day:  March 17

March 17 is, of course, St Patrick's Feast Day, but did you know that St. Patrick wasn't Irish?  He was kidnapped at a young age and brought to Ireland where he was enslaved until he escaped around the age of twenty. Years later he returned to Ireland for his ministry.

-2018-19 Registration includes both online registration requirements and paper registration forms. To avoid a $50 late fee, families must complete BOTH portions by Monday at 3pm. USE THIS CHECKLIST TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE COMPLETED ALL ITEMS.

At O'Hara, the safety of our students and staff remains our highest and most important priority. As we continue our work as a school to improve and enhance school safety, we want to update you on our progress and inform you of changes that we will be making later this school year. Please read below for information on recent changes, and visit our School Safety webpage (password: riseup ) for reminders about past upgrades and safety procedural changes.

There are a few upcoming changes that we are implementing that will be highly visible to our students. These changes, as well as continuing conversations about school safety, will be discussed with students in classrooms at an age-appropriate level as we continue to increase safety drills and make additions to our procedures. We ask that you please have thoughtful conversations with your children about school safety at home . Knowing just what to say to a child on this topic can be tricky, but we recommend emphasizing that in an emergency situation, children should stop, calmly look for a teacher or adult, and listen to their instructions.

●  At our Monday Morning Assembly on March 12, we will explain our new safety whistles that have been distributed to all staff. These whistles have a special high pitch and students will be asked to "stop, look, and listen" when they hear one.

●  In the coming weeks, we will be sharing the book " I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared! " written by Julia Cook, in each classroom. This book has been recommended by the Eugene Police Department and reviewed by the O'Hara administration. It introduces the ALICE training in a child friendly way. It also talks about the "STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN" signal (which is our safety whistle).

We will be practicing "emergency" drills with both evacuation and lockdown procedures later this Spring. We will notify parents of these drills as they happen. In case of an actual emergency, parents would be notified through the texting system and/or by phone with specific details and directions.

Education and empowerment are the keys to preparation and relieving fear. The skills we will cover in our drills are concepts that work everywhere, not just at school, and they are considered life-long safety skills. Please check in with your students to see what safety steps they learn.

Thanks for your attention to this important matter.  If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Conway .
