The new year is off to a fast and energetic start, with January quickly coming to a close. Public school districts are back in session, navigating a profound and radical shift in education policies and politics at the national, state, and local levels. The challenges and opportunities for advancing public education have never been greater. Are you ready for the struggle?

Ohio Alliance of Black School Educators (OABSE) is preparing for some challenging yet critical times as we move into the second half of the academic year. We are calling on district leaders to join us on March 20 for the Superintendent Commission Business Luncheon, where we will address the pivotal issue of literacy and the science of reading with insights from national and state thought leaders.

In February, OABSE will convene a meeting with district leaders from the Heights communities in Cleveland to discuss reestablishing the Heights Alliance of Black School Educators (HABSE). This meeting will be followed by an inaugural organizational session, marking an important step forward in advancing educational equity in the state.

Additionally, OABSE and the NABSE Midwest Region are preparing to launch the Coalition of Allies (COA), an initiative that will debut at the upcoming Annual Midwest Education Conference. This conference is approaching quickly, and we encourage you to review the links below to gather the necessary information to register and actively participate in this impactful event.

The OABSE/SAABSE Coalition of Allies has also made significant strides in Sandusky, where local organizations such as the NAACP, Stand Sandusky, the Sandusky Club of Black Business and Professional Women, and several others are planning to join forces in the coming weeks. I am incredibly proud of the outstanding work and programming that our local affiliates across Ohio are spearheading in collaboration with their communities and school districts.

On the national front, NABSE is hard at work preparing for the National Teachers Institute, the Southwest and Midwest regions' launch of the Coalition of Allies, and the NABSE International Conference 2025. Together, we are forging ahead to meet the challenges of this year with strength, unity, and purpose. Thank you for your continued dedication to advancing the education of Black students and uplifting our communities.

Forward ever, backward never,

Thandabantu Maceo

OABSE President
