Dear OABSE Members, Partners, and Supporters,
As the vibrant colors of fall settle in, I hope this message finds each of you well and energized for the journey ahead. October marks an important time for reflection and renewed commitment to the work we do, and this season brings many opportunities for our continued advancement in education.
I want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible achievements we’ve seen across our community this past year. From the success of our mentorship programs to the powerful conversations fostered during our leadership forums, we are collectively making strides in creating pathways to excellence for Black and Brown students. Your unwavering dedication continues to make a tangible difference, and I am deeply grateful for your contributions.
As NABSE's Midwest Regional Representative, I am elated to share a historic milestone with you. On October 10, I traveled to Wisconsin, where we gathered in Milwaukee to establish the Wisconsin Alliance of Black School Educators (WiABSE). This marks a momentous step forward in expanding NABSE’s mission across the Midwest. Congratulations to the newly elected leadership team, led by President Richard Watkins, for stepping up to champion the cause of Black and Brown students and educators in Wisconsin. We look forward to witnessing the incredible work that will unfold under their leadership!
A special shout-out is also in order for the Leila Green Affiliate in Canton, Ohio, which is celebrating 50 years of commitment to NABSE’s mission. For half a century, they have championed Black and Brown students and educators, and their unwavering dedication is an inspiration to us all. Congratulations on this remarkable milestone!
Additionally, I am thrilled to share an exciting update from our own community. Last week, we had a productive meeting in the Greater Cleveland Heights area regarding the re-establishment of the Heights Alliance of Black School Educators (HABSE). We are now one step closer to achieving this important goal, and I am filled with optimism about the impact HABSE will have on local students and educators as we move forward.
However, our work is far from over. As we move forward, we must remain committed to addressing the systemic inequities that hinder educational access and success for Black and Brown students. This means doubling down on our efforts to advocate for policy changes, create inclusive environments, and ensure our young scholars have the resources and support they need to thrive. Every action we take moves us closer to a future where all students, regardless of their background, can succeed.
This month's newsletter will highlight key initiatives, upcoming events, and inspiring stories from members who are making a difference. I encourage all of you to stay engaged and participate in our events and discussions. Together, we can continue to empower the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and changemakers.
Lastly, I want to thank our partners, educators, and community members who continuously support OABSE’s mission. Your belief in our vision and your tireless efforts to push the boundaries of what is possible for Black and Brown students inspire us all. Let’s keep the momentum going. We have much to accomplish, and I am confident that, as a community, we can make transformative impacts in the educational landscape.
Forward ever, backward never,
