Planning like an Artist

In this episode, Mary and Shelley interview planner and artist: Miguel Vazquez! He is a FAICP planner who likes to mix the worlds of art and planning together. We discuss how to think like an artist to become a better planner and why that is important. We also discuss various projects he's been involved in where art was used to assist in planning activities.Miguel is also heavily involved in the Latinos in Planning Division of the American Planning Association (APA) and the California Chapter of the APA.

Podcast Editor or Assistant Editor Needed

Help OAPA expand our reach and community interest in planning.


Are you inspired by the OAPA Better Planners Podcast and wanting to be a contributor? Expand your outreach skillset by providing editing assistance to the OAPA podcast team. We are seeking someone with audio and/or video editing experience to be part of a 2-3 member editing team.


This volunteer job can be performed virtually and will require ~3-5 hours / month, which may also include attending podcast planning meetings. This role is supported by the Education and Outreach Committee and Podcast subcommittee. To discuss further and learn more about podcast volunteering, contact Mary Heberling-Creighton.

Mark Hinshaw, a notable, accomplished, and renown urban designer and planner in the Pacific Northwest, approached us about offering a 5-day seminar in his adopted home (post-retirement) of Santa Vittoria in Matenano, Italy. He has assembled an impressive line-up of instructors who will enable attendees to:

 

  • Learn about both ancient and contemporary urban development practices in Italy.
  • Experience living places that date back more than a thousand years.
  • Exchange approaches to planning, regulations, and development with Italian counterparts.
  • Discover a part of Italy little known to American travelers.
  • Observe ongoing major capital investment by towns while preserving their character.

The Planning Webcast Series offers a fantastic opportunity for OAPA members to access dozens of free CM approved webcasts each year. These sessions cover a variety of topics, including the popular AICP-required subjects and both trending and foundational planning themes. Hosted by APA Chapters and Divisions across the country, these webcasts ensure a wide range of perspectives and expertise.
