December Legislative Update

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed by President Obama December 10, 2015, replacing the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). House Bill 2, the charter school reform legislation, takes effect February 1, 2016, implementing many requirements for schools, sponsors, school boards and management companies.

National Leaders Headline the OAPCS 9th Annual Ohio Charter Schools Conference

More than 566 people attended the OAPCS 9th Annual Ohio Charter Schools Conference November 12-13, 2015 to hear national leaders and presenters discuss policy trends, legislation, oversight and the future of charter schools. Save the date for next year: December 7-8, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Conference Center in Columbus.

OAPCS School Leader and Teacher Awards Recognize Outstanding Educators

Landon Brown, School Leader of Stambaugh Charter Academy in Youngstown, Ohio, received the School Leader of the Year Award and Stephanie Waldeck, a math teacher at Graham Expeditionary Middle School in Columbus, Ohio, received the Teacher of the Year Award at the OAPCS 9 th  Annual Charter Schools Conference November 13, 2015.

State Senator Peggy Lehner Receives Legislator of the Year Award

For her commitment to education, students and choice, OAPCS honored State Senator Peggy Lehner with its inaugural Legislator of the Year Award at the OAPCS 9 th  Annual Charter Schools Conference November 13, 2015. 

Ohio Ranked #3 in Nation in NACSA Analysis of State Charter School Oversight

Ohio has one of the top rankings in the nation in the second annual NACSA analysis of state charter school oversight policies.

Application Guidelines Approved for $25 Million School Facilities Fund

The Ohio School Facilities Commission will begin accepting applications in January, 2016  so charter schools can submit proposals for grant funds to construct new buildings. Applications will be scored on educational, instructional and financial quality.  

Online Learning Day Brings Ohio Families to Statehouse Rally

Hundreds of families and students brought their message of support for online learning to the Ohio Statehouse October 7, 2015 to raise awareness about school choice and educate legislators.

ODE Advisory Panel Issues Preliminary SPR Recommendations

Preliminary recommendations on revising the Sponsor Performance Review (SPR) were released by the Ohio Department of Education's (ODE) Advisory Panel on the SPR last month. OAPCS submitted a formal response to the recommendations December 4th during ODE's public commentary phase.  

Research Studies Investigate Enrollment and Partnerships

Ohio districts and schools are featured in recently released national studies that examine enrollment trends and traditional district and charter school engagement.
