When Andrea Soto was 10 years old, her family immigrated to Texas from Mexico. Her grandmother, who lived in Houston, had Alzheimer's disease, and her parents wanted to be closer to help with her care. Growing up, Soto often served as an interpreter between her family members and their doctors.

As abortion restrictions take effect across the South in the wake of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, cancer doctors are trying to decipher the laws. They're grappling with how to discuss options with pregnant patients, who may be forced to choose whether to proceed or forgo lifesaving cancer treatments that can prove toxic for the fetus.

With the overturn of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2022, abortion policies and reproductive rights are in the hands of each state. Half of U.S. states are expected to ban abortion in the days and weeks following the Court's decision taking away the constitutional right to abortion.
