April 25, 2019
What wonderful Lent, Holy Week, and Easter worship services we’ve enjoyed these past weeks! I am very thankful for all our staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to make sure our worship brings people into God’s presence. Now that we are fully in the Easter season, I am excited for our new worship series: Unexpected Surprises. We all have experienced the excitement that comes with the sudden reversal of our expectations. The early followers of Jesus in Acts had no shortage of these experiences. The resurrection of Jesus sets off a host of unexpected events and changes for his disciples, even changes within themselves. Through our worship we will explore some of these stories in the book of Acts, and how God uses unsuspecting people like us to accomplish God’s work.

One other note—I am extremely grateful for the outpouring of love and encouragement so many of you have shown in the past week for my two year anniversary at Oakland. Our family is very thankful to be here and I consider it a privilege to serve as your Pastor! -Jeff
Sullivan Middle School Volunteer Opportunities

Let's help the students and teachers at Sullivan Middle School finish their school year well! During end of year testing, teachers are not allowed to leave their rooms during the three hour block. Volunteers are needed to sit in the hall, to escort students to the bathroom or office. Testing will take place on May 7th, 9th, 14th and 16th from 9AM-Noon. If you are able to help, please email Kelly Scott (scottks@winthrop.edu) or click on the button below.
Coffee with the Pastor
April 28

Guests are invited to come together in the Fellowship Hall at 9:45AM on Sunday, April 28th for a conversation about how to be a part of OBC, mission options and opportunities for their family. If you know of people who may be interested in learning more about OBC, please invite them to join Pastor Jeff in the Fellowship Hall on the 28th.
Election of 70th Anniversary Committee

As we look toward July of 2020, which is the 70th Anniversary of Oakland Baptist Church, our Nominating Committee has recommended the following people to serve on the planning committee: Dan Cox, Anne Ledford, Ben Lucas, Beckye Partlow, Erica Smith, and David Vipperman.

We will have an opportunity for discussion on Wednesday, May 1 at 6PM in the Chapel. We will vote, in both services, on Sunday May 5.

We will also be voting on Faye Lucas, for Trustee. Faye was nominated by our Fellowship of Deacons to replace Mike Hauss who recently resigned, as he and Teresa move to Charleston.
Associate Minister Search Committee

The Nominating Committee is excited to announce that the following people have agreed to serve on our Associate Minister Search Committee:
Mack Bailey, Chris Howle, Carlton Heustess, Jimmy Johnson, Caroline Krueger, Erica Smith, Brian Wacaster, and Meredith Westbrook.

Please hold them and the work they will soon begin in prayer.
VBS Volunteers
We need your help!

Thank you to those who have already signed up to help with Vacation Bible School! If you have not, we are still in need of some volunteers to ensure that this is a special week for our children.

If you are available the week of June 24-28 from 9AM - Noon, we would greatly appreciate if you would consider being a leader in one of our preschool classes or being an assistant in one of the rooms that children rotate through (recreation, art, storytelling, etc). If you have any questions or are able to volunteer, please contact Kim Shaw (kshaw@oaklandchurch.com).
May 5

Our Youth have planned a special service and are excited to have the privilege to lead worship on May 5. We hope you will join us at 8:45AM or 11AM.  Both services will be in the Sanctuary.
Pizza and Ice Cream Party

Join us on Wednesday, May 8 for an evening of fun and fellowship! Our young friends will share some of the things they have learned about missions, as well as the projects in which they have participated. We will also recognize our MANY volunteers who make all of the great things at OBC possible.

We will enjoy a dinner of pizza and salad from 5PM-6PM. At 6PM will begin our brief program and recognition, which will be followed by ice cream sundaes! If you have a child in Mission Friends or Mission Movers, we need you to be here! If you are a volunteer, in any capacity, we need you to be here! If you like to eat pizza and ice cream, we need you to be here.

Please click the button below to let us know that you are attending. The cost is the same as other Wednesday night meals.
New Sunday School Class

We are blessed with a number of young adults in their 30’s and 40’s such that a need has arisen to begin a new Sunday School class. To help jumpstart this class, Pastor Jeff and Krista will be hosting a cookout on  Friday, May 10th from 5:30-7:30PM  at their home. Please RSVP to the church office by Wednesday, May 8 th  if you plan to attend.
Can you imagine having a sick child and going to a drug store but not being able to ask the pharmacist for recommendations on medicine because of a language barrier? Our ESL program is a long standing ministry of OBC that serves both children and adults in our community who are working to learn English so they can effectively communicate. We are beyond grateful for the awesome job Patti Robinette and Diana North have done, leading this program for the last 6+ years. They have loved and served faithfully, but are ready to step aside.

In order for this ministry to continue, we need new directors. Who is next? Is it you? Please prayerfully consider if God is calling you to serve in this capacity. And don't worry, you DO NOT need to be able to speak Spanish. If you are willing to help with this ministry, please contact the church office. We would love for our next directors to have a few weeks to shadow Patti and Diana this Spring, before taking over in the Fall.
Transportation Assistance Needed

We have a small number of dedicated Oaklanders with disabilities (vision impaired or other physical challenges) who still desire active attendance in Worship services, Sunday School, and/or Wednesday night activities. These individuals rely on fellow church members for transportation to and from OBC. We have a devoted group of persons who routinely transport those in need; however, when the regular transporters are out-of-town or unable to provide transportation, we need a back-up team of willing Oaklanders to step in and ensure all those wishing to attend OBC activities are able to do so. If you are willing to substitute, on the rare occasions when our regular transporters are not available, please let the church office know, or click below. Thank you for helping our physically challenged members remain active participants in the life of Oakland!
