January 17, 2019
It is a new year and there are many new opportunities for worship, study and fellowship in the coming weeks. In other words, this is a long newsletter filled with important information. Grab a cup of coffee and your calendar! We look forward to sharing in these special opportunities with you.
New Sermon Series
beginning Sunday

We may not be able to solve all the world’s problems, but we are called to bear witness to the injustice and heartache we see around us. During this six week sermon series we will explore how we can speak the truth of Christ to very difficult subjects. On Sunday we will wrestle with racial justice.
Wednesday Night Bible Study

Each Wednesday, as part of the Bearing Witness sermon series, a follow-up conversation will take place as we seek to speak the truth of Christ to these difficult subjects. This will be an opportunity for youth and adults to learn and reflect together. Join us at 6PM in the Chapel for these conversations.
Welcome!

On Sunday we had the joy of welcoming three new members to the OBC Family!
Terry and Sue Smith
Terry, who grew up in Thomaston, Georgia, and Sue, who grew up in South Bend, Indiana, were both baptized as young teenagers. Sue is a retired school teacher. Terry has worked in accounting for the last 43 years and currently serves as the assistant controller for Qure Medical. They have lived in Rock Hill for eight years, have two adult children and recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary! Terry and Sue live at 535 Annalinde Lane. They can be contacted at tasmith@comporium.net.

Sam Powell
Sam is a Virginia native who lived in Charlotte for 32 years before recently moving to Rock Hill. Sam has two daughters and five grandchildren.
He is a VA Tech graduate who has spent his professional career as an Industrial Engineer, managing the design of hospitals, as well as two Federal Reserve Banks. Sam bowls in a league and also serves on the Boards of both Prime Timers of Charlotte and Prime Timers Worldwide. Sam lives at 378 Quinby Way. He can be contacted at spowelljr803@gmail.com.
On Sunday, we also had the joy of celebrating with Mike and Jennifer McPhail as they, along with big brother and sister, Graham and Elodie promised to raise Violet and Adelaide to know and love the Lord.

What a privilege it is to share in this journey with the McPail Family, as we too promised to teach Violet and Adelaide about Jesus.

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14

Church Office Closed
Monday, January 21

The church office will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr Day. However, there will still be plenty of activity within the walls. Our Youth will be having a lock-in Sunday evening. In addition to fun and fellowship they will be designing a multi-sensory prayer space that will soon occupy several empty rooms in the basement. They will also take a field trip just before midnight to watch the lunar eclipse and talk about the majesty of God's creation. As the youth are leaving the lock-in on Monday morning, children will be arriving to participate is a day of service. More details on this event are below.

We invite you to pray for our children and youth during this special time that they will have together.
Children's MLK Day of Service
January 21, 9AM - 3PM

Kindergarten - 5th graders are invited to meet at OBC on Monday for a great day of service and fellowship! Children will complete various projects as they learn about caring for others and showing God's love to all people. Please bring money for lunch.

Contact Kim (kshaw@oaklandchurch.com) for more details and to sign up.
Our youth are collecting non-perishable food items as part of the Souper Bowl of Caring offering. The Souper Bowl of Caring, a nationwide movement, uses the energy of the Super Bowl to care for those in their local communities who are hungry.

Help us tackle hunger in Rock Hill by placing your non-perishable food items on the table outside of the Sanctuary or under the welcome table in the Gym. Last year we were able to take 1299 items to Project Hope. Let's work together to make it at least 1300 this year!

New Tuesday Night Ladies Bible Study
Begins February 5, 6:15PM - 7:30PM

Gideon: Your Weakness. God’s Strength  by Priscilla Shirer will be the new study for the Tuesday Night Ladies Bible Study. This is a study which focuses on the fact that our "weaknesses don’t stand a chance in the face of God’s overwhelming, almighty power.” Through this study we will be encouraged to recognize our weakness as the key that the Lord gives us to unlock the full experience of His strength in our lives. Instead of ignoring or trying to escape our weaknesses, we will learn to see them as the gifts given specifically and strategically by God. If you've ever felt insufficient, ill-equipped, incompetent, or outnumbered, this study is for you. Click here  for a promotional video and more information about the study. We would love for you to join us.

Contact Shirley Bailey ( shholland@comporium.net ) or Patti Robinette ( probinette1861@gmail.com ) for more information and to receive a book ($14.)
