October 17, 2019
Through our partnership with CBF Global Missions, we share the Gospel in word and deed with people in need here at home and in remote areas of the world. This means we care for children and families, give food to the hungry, provide homes and hospitality for refugees, offer life-saving medical care and so much more. Most importantly, we are bearing witness to the good news of Jesus Christ! BUT none of this can happen without your financial gifts. As we continue working toward our missions goal of $30,000, remember that 100% of your gifts will send CBF field personnel to share the good news of Jesus around the world. So give generously; and give today!!! CLICK HERE to learn more about how your gifts are helping around the world.
Thank You, Kim!

This week marks the five year anniversary of Kim Shaw serving at Oakland Baptist Church. Kim, we are grateful for the love and energy you pour into ministry with our children!
Conversation on Mental Health
October 23, 6PM-7PM

Join us in the Chapel for a conversation about signs of stress, anxiety, and depression in children, youth and adults led by Dr. Karen Neal, Associate Professor of Psychology at Queens University. Whether it is for yourself, your child, your grandchild, your parents, your spouse, your neighbor or your coworker, this is an important conversation in which to take part! Parents, if you are planning to attend there will be childcare available until 7PM.
Flu Shots at OBC
October 23, 5PM-7PM

Jennifer McPhail, pharmacist at Harris Teeter, will be offering flu shots on Wednesday, October 23 in the gym from 5PM-7PM. Patients 12 and older will be able to get their flu shot with no prescription needed. Please bring your prescription insurance card and/or Medicare card. The cost of the vaccine without insurance is $40. Please feel free to contact Jennifer with any questions at   jennmcphail@yahoo.com  or 803-984-2686. Oakland Baptist Ministry Center
October 19, 9AM-11:30AM
Fall/Winter Opening

Saturday will be the first day of shopping for the Fall/Winter season at the Ministry Center. There are beautiful clothes and shoes, Halloween costumes, and decor. Adults 18 and older must have their own ID and may shop for children as long as they have something with the child's name on it (doctor appts, school records, etc).

Please share this information with anyone who might benefit from this great ministry!

ALSO - The Ministry Center is in need of plastic grocery bags/ larger shopping bags, as well as ladies clothing size 0-10 (tops, bottoms, suits, blazers, etc). These may be brought through the door on Saturday or Wednesday. The Dropbox will be open soon!
We have the awesome problem of an expanding English as a Second Language Program! In order to adequately serve this growing ministry we need more helpers! Please consider volunteering on Wednesday evenings. Volunteering for just 30 minutes would make a big difference. And don't worry, you do not need to be able to speak Spanish.

Here's how you can help from 5PM-5:30PM:
Set up materials in the Fellowship Hall
Make sure everyone has a name tag and new participants are registered
Help participants get their meals

Here's how you can help from 6PM-7PM:
Assist one of the ESL teachers

Here's how you can help from 7PM-7:30PM:
Put materials back into the ESL Closet

If you are interested in helping with one or more of these opportunities, please click below. If you have any questions please contact Sue Smith (tasmith@comporium.net) or Missy in the church office.
Toward Bold Faithfulness

When CBF Executive Coordinator, Dr. Paul Baxley was at OBC he gave us a sneak peak into an upcoming initi ative called Toward Bold Faithfulness. This initiative launched Monday. Dr. Baxley said the time is right for the Fellowship to enter a “shared season of discovering where God most needs us to place our energies so that our congregations can thrive, and Christ’s mission can flourish among us.” Click "More Details" to read about this exciting season of discernment and discovery.

All Saints Banner

A beautiful banner has been donated to our church for All Saints Sunday (November 3). The banner was made and given in honor of Becky Sanderson and Suzanne Ringer by Joye Mann and the Banner Ladies of Union United Methodist, Irmo, SC. You are invited to place a bell on the banner in memory of your loved ones. The banner will be in the upstairs hallway on October 27 and before services on November 3. Bells will be available at church or you may bring a small bell from home.
Whenever there is a death in our church family, the Bereavement Committee organizes and serves a meal for the family, or serves refreshments after the memorial service. This is a special and important ministry of hospitality and love. In order to do this, the Bereavement Committee relies on you, our members to help prepare food. Please click "more information" to read about the simple ways you can be part of this ministry. And then click "I'll help!" to sign up.
Children and Youth Basketball

It's time to sign up for Church Basketball! We offer teams for children and youth in grades 1 - 12, through the York County Christian Basketball Association. For those in grades 1-4, the cost is $35/child. For those in grades 5-12, the cost is $45/child. Jerseys are included in the cost.

Please click on the button "Put me in coach!" to register your child(ren). Due to team size limitations, first priority will be given to church members. Non-members are welcome to play if we have space. Priority to non-members will be based on date of registration. Please register by November 3.

If you would like to pay with a credit card, click on the button "pay for basketball." Please type "basketball" in the comments box. If you would prefer to pay with cash or check, you may drop off your payment to the church office anytime between now and the beginning of the season.

We do not know the exact schedules yet, but practice will begin in late November and games will begin in early January (some youth teams may have a couple games in December).

Christmas for Connie Maxwell

The “wish list” has been received from Connie Maxwell and currently the gift tags are being prepared. Distribution of the gift tags will begin on November 3. Due to a little difficulty getting all the tags adopted last year, we will distribute tags for the children first. Please make an effort to secure what he/she has requested and limit your purchase to approximately $20-$25 (this avoids the possibly of hurt feelings and/or disappointment when other residents receive pricer gifts). In addition, the facility has asked that gifts be wrapped in boxes if at all possible. Many of the gifts are transported to a satellite campus after their arrival in Greenwood. Gift bags just do not hold up as well.

Thank you! ~Jane Rawls
