A message from our Deacon Chairperson regarding the return to in-person worship on August 2.
Dear Oakland family,

I am sharing with you a direct message from your Fellowship of Deacons concerning next steps for Oakland Baptist Church. You may recall that one month ago we announced a date of August 2 nd  to return for in-person worship provided there was not a significant increase in positive COVID cases. Unfortunately, we have seen dramatic increases of positive cases across our sate and particularly in York County. After a lengthy and productive discussion on July 7 th , the Fellowship of Deacons have made the decision to postpone the August 2 nd  date. While ministerial staff opinions contributed to our discussion, this decision comes directly and completely from the Deacons.

We understand that not reconvening on August 2 nd  is disappointing news, we believe this is in our best interest in keeping our church body safe and healthy. As for an eventual return date, the Fellowship of Deacons have agreed to remain fluid. Each month we will reconsider whether or not it is safe to return to our sanctuary for in-person worship, as well as other in-person activities.

In the meantime, we have committed our available time and talents to the staff in assisting with creative options for OBC family engagement. We will continue to find other ways of gathering such as outdoor worship and online opportunities.

Let me add a word of praise and gratitude for the leadership, focus, and hard work our staff has given to finding creative, diverse, and encouraging ways to continue our Christian growth during this unprecedented time. There is no educational preparation for leading a church during a pandemic. The worship and study opportunities offered to all segments of our church family over the past four months have been driven by talent, skill, and incredible teamwork. To Jeff, Suzanne, Leigh, Kim, Eddie, Missy, and all our other staff… We Thank You!

I also want to personally thank all of you for the positive, caring, flexible and, yes, God-like spirit I have witnessed over the past months from OBC folk. Let’s continue to care for ourselves and our neighbors in days ahead. Stay safe and God bless.

Susan York
Deacon Chairperson
Worship in August

Sir Isaac Newton’s third law of motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. In other words, an object cannot remain still when impacted by an external force. Newton used a pendulum to simulate how this law works. This year has impacted all of us and forced us to move beyond our comfort zones. What will we learn from this experience? How will this impact our church moving forward? To answer those question our worship focus for August will come from the book of Acts. We will learn how the early church reACTed to difficult situations and how those reACTions shaped their understanding of what it means to be the church.
Dinner & Devotion
August 9, 5PM

We will gather in our grassy lot for socially distanced fellowship, followed by an outdoor worship experience. Beginning at 5PM, Taco Bout Pizza food truck will be selling food. To view their menu and pictures of their food, CLICK HERE . At 6:00PM we will share in a time of worship. Everyone is asked to wear a mask, bring your own seating, and remain socially distanced. This is taking the place of Oakland's Got Talent. We feel it is best to postpone that event until a later date.

Throughout the summer we will announce numbers from our BINGO board, along with more details about the mission/outreach activity to complete. As you complete the activity, mark off the board number. Remember to post pictures on social media, tag us and include #growingatobc in the caption.

Between today and next Thursday complete B1 and O23 on your BINGO board. To complete B1 bake a sweet treat and deliver it to a neighbor. To complete O23 make a list of people in the school system (teachers, administrators, bus drivers, janitors, students, parents, etc) and pray for them each day.
