Cancer Prevention and Safety Leadership – OC Firefighters L3631
Submitted By Jeff Hughes, OC Firefighters Local 3631 Wellness Agent
There are many items that still need attention to reduce our members’ risk of an occupational disease like cancer. It was recently stated that the heavy lifting has been completed for the OCFA Cancer Awareness & Prevention program. The most important element in a cancer prevention and education program is leadership. There remains a need for a true leader’s intent to reduce exposures and accept nothing less for the members. This means we should not accept any ambivalence to new procedures that were established for your members’ safety.
We all recognize the “Everyone Goes Home” motto of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), but we are often okay with overlooking activities that do affect your members’ long-term health. I encourage every member of this local to familiarize themselves with the 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives. Safety leadership takes courage and determination. It means often taking a stance that may feel overly conservative on things that we accepted and overlooked in the past. For example: Clean your PPE after every incident when gear is exposed to smoke, rinsing off after each exposure, not wearing or transporting contaminated PPE in the passenger compartment, showering within an hour, proper diet and exercise. All these tactics will reduce the risk to your people. Accept no less. Do it for them and their family.
"Firefighting is not dangerous, it is rather, filled with risks of different types and levels. None of us can eliminate all of these risks and still be effective at accomplishing our mission of serving those who call us as their last-ditch effort on the worst day of their lives. However, we can give our members the best possible chance we can to go home safely to their families at the end of each call we respond to. We do this by managing the risks involved, either by eliminating or preventing the risks we can, or by being pro-active, prepared for and reducing the effects of those risks on us when something bad happens. The only way that we can get safer and reduce risks while still being effective at our mission is to become better at everything we do".
