Breast Cancer Awareness Month & Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month
Submitted by Jeff Hughes, OC Firefighters Local 3631 Wellness Agent

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Female Firefighters have a much higher incidence of breast cancer due to exposures to the fire environment and sleep interruptions. A recent study indicated that San Francisco FD Firefighters have a breast cancer rate six times the national average!

The IAFF and the OCFA have supported the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Breast Cancer Awareness Month for many years. Several fire departments support the cause by wearing pink t-shirts and applying decals to fire engines/trucks. Some departments wrap rigs in pink and even create custom uniform pink patches for use in October.

Unfortunately, breast cancer is not the only cancer risk facing Firefighters. Four years ago, the OCFA was working on a plan for October Breast Cancer Awareness when a member of the Local 3631 thought that we should also focus our efforts on raising awareness and creating prevention tactics for all cancers related to our occupation as Firefighters. That is how Breast Cancer Awareness Month became the inspiration for a National Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month and the initiative for a national Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month began.

In 2018, a resolution for a Cancer Awareness Month was passed unanimously at the Seattle IAFF Convention with the support of the Firefighter Cancer Support Network and the American Cancer Society. The goal is to continue developing resources and content that fire departments throughout the nation can utilize for a Firefighter safety stand down to be held every January. Be on the lookout for the plan and available resources for the January Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month at IAFF.org or Firefighter Cancer Support Network.
