May was full of amazing celebrations!

Commencement exercises for the 2023 Oxnard College class were outstanding. Hundreds of accomplished students celebrated their degree and certificate achievements in front of many family and friends at the OC Stadium.

The OC Foundation helped inspire the celebration by presenting each graduate with a commemorative medallion to be worn at Commencement. While students were receiving their medallions, they took their first step as alumni by signing up for the Oxnard College Alumni Network.

Record number of graduates signed up for the Oxnard College Alumni Network!

Joined by the OC STEM Alumni Association and the OC Athletic Alumni Association, a team of leaders welcomed students and encouraged them to join the alumni network. Very special thanks goes to Cassy Ortega and Jaime Lopez of the OCSAA. Emily Lopez of the OCAAA, and Brenda Heredia, Michael Inda, and Alex Nguyen of the OC Foundation Board of Directors for playing a big role. It was the first time the alumni organizations worked together to recruit new members.

TRANSFER CEREMONY

Transfer Center hosts inspiring ceremony

OC’s University Transfer Center hosted its annual Transfer Ceremony on Friday, May 5 to an auditorium full of administration, faculty, students, and families. The end of the year celebration recognized students for their academic performances noted their pursuits of further education. The event was co-sponsored by Proyecto Exito and the OC Foundation.

Attendees were inspired by remarks made by Letty Mojica, OC’s Transfer & Honors Counselor, and Oscar Cobian, OC’s Acting President. A highlight of the event was the alumni student panel, which revealed keen insight into what transfer students can expect during their first year at the university level. Panel participants included Gabriela Rodriguez, Title V Grant Coordinator for Proyecto Exito, Emilie Cuevas ’22, a Speech, Hearing and Language Sciences student at San Diego State University, and Karina Rios ’22, a Sociology and Deaf Studies student at Cal State Northridge.

The OC Foundation was pleased to be a part of the ceremony, as its scholarship grants for transfer students were presented during the overall Presentation of Certificates.

The event provided an opportunity for scholarship donors to personally meet their scholarship grant recipients. They and the other attendees enjoy a nice meal, which included a live mariachi band. It was truly a wonderful event.

STEM ALUMNI

OC STEM Alumni Association's

June 2023 Alum of the Month

Alex Guerrero '19

I completed my Bachelors degree at UC Davis in 2021.

I am teaching math at Santa Clara High School, here in Oxnard.

My favorite memory was working together with my classmates in the library. Studying right before exams for Linear Algebra.

In 5-10 years I hope to have my masters in math completed and to be teaching at a community college, preferably Oxnard College.
