New scholarships established!

Student success is the driving force of all OC Foundation programs. In addition to the record number of students applying for 2023/2024 scholarship grants, the Foundation witnessed the creation of a strong number of new scholarships. The Foundation is pleased to announce the following new funds established last fiscal year:

  • Carmen Ramirez Scholarship - awards continuing/returning children or grandchildren of farmworkers.
  • Emmie Brownlee Scholarship - awards transfer students pursuing a degree in visual or performing arts.
  • John Elmer Scholarship - awards continuing/returning Educational Assistance Center (EAC) students.
  • Luke Langelier Scholarship - awards transfer students embodying Luke's spirit and career pursuits.
  • Ventura County Bomberos - awards students pursuing fire service careers.
  • Don Zreghigian Scholarship - awards paralegal students.

If you're interested in creating a scholarship to hopefully be awarded for the 2024/2025 school year, contact us right away. The deadline is September 15.

STRATEGIC PLAN

Your feedback was amazing!

The Foundation thanks everyone who completed the campus and community survey presented in last month's bulletin. A larger than anticipated number of people participated, delivering exceptional feedback. The responses are being analyzed to develop discussion items and recommended objectives at the upcoming Foundation board retreat.

The goal of the Foundation's first strategic plan since 2004 is to identify strategies that will best advance its mission of supporting Oxnard College and its students.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Next year's schedule is set!

As the Foundation is working to close out the 2023/2024 scholarship season, next year's scholarship schedule has been set.

Applications for Entering, Continuing/Returning, and Transfer students will open on October 3. Deadlines for each are different with the first deadline being February 29 for transfer students.

Workshops will begin on Friday, October 13 to demonstrate the application platform for all interested students. The Foundation is collaborating with the Library Learning Resource Center to host workshops and provide Writing Center assistance to students.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Bomberos Toss for Scholarships

A large group of fire fighters, many of whom joined by family and friends, assembled at Topa Topa Brewery to raise funds for the latest OC Foundation scholarship to benefit Fire Academy students.

The Ventura County Bomberos, a collection of incredible and motivated fire personnel, hosted its inaugural event on Saturday, July 29. The goal was simple, raise enough funds to award $2,500 for its first allocation.

MARKETPLACE

Offering an abundance of community services!

The Community Marketplace continues to serve as a community of its own, as upwards of 2,000 community members visit every Sunday between 9am and 3pm. They enjoy shopping from a wide variety of household items, produce, flowers, gifts, and more, while enjoying different meal options in the food court.

The Marketplace has been the home to Swap Meet Justice, which hosts a large event on the last Sunday of each month. These leaders host their monthly citizenship and social justice fair featuring 30+ community organizations which provide legal, health, community, and family resources at no cost.

This Sunday, August 6, Clinicas del Camino Real is hosting a community health fair in celebration of National Health Center Week. Roughly 20 community organizations will on site to share services to community members. The fair will take place from 10am to 2pm in the plaza next to the OC Performing Arts Building.

August 2023 Alum of the Month

Jacqueline Marquez '20

I transferred from Oxnard College in Spring 2020.

I am currently finishing my Bachelors for Electrical Engineering and working part time as an Electrical Engineer for the U.S. Navy at Port Hueneme.

My favorite memory of Oxnard College are the professors and mentors who pushed me to achieve more than I was capable as a student.

I see myself in the next 10 years having a family while living in a small ranch home taking care of a horse and some chickens.
