Alumni Profile
Patricia Fairhead, Class of 1946
 Pat Fairhead

When Patricia Fairhead, M.Ed, MA, RCA, CSPWC, OSC, attended OCAD U from 1943-1947, Franklin Carmichael (of the Group of Seven) was her teacher for drawing, water colour and design, and Eric Aldwinkle taught her Munsell Color. This art education--including a proficiency prize-- has been the foundation for her life as a painter.

Since that time, she has had over 70 solo shows in Canada and the U.S.A. and group shows internationally; her work is included in over 200 corporate collections, National and Provincial collections and a watercolour in the Royal Collection of Prints & Drawings at Windsor Castle, England.

Recently, Ms. Fairhead

was awarded the A.J. Casson Medal and Award from The Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour in the 86th Annual Open Water Exhibition for her painting "Water Circus".  The Medal is presented to the creator of the best painting in this annual international juried exhibition and is the highest accolade bestowed by the Society for artistic creativity.

Based in the Muskoka region, Ms. Fairhead has taught art nationally in universities, colleges and community groups. She is currently represented by galleries in Toronto, London (Ontario), Bracebridge, and New York City.

Reflecting on her time at OCAD U, Fairhead recalls that Carmichael every so often would say in class, "Above all, be original". It's safe to say she took his advice to heart!

The "Open Water" exhibition is ongoing until November 18 at the John B. Aird Gallery, 900 Bay Street. Macdonald Block, Toronto.

Lee Richmond, BFA'06 (Drawing & Painting)

Life Plan 16

LifePlan # 16 Big Day, collage on paper, 6" x 22 1/2"

Lee Richmond's passion is interpreting life through art. Her artistic work strives to make order out of chaos and extract meaning from our stages of the life using personal, and symbolic references relating to our cultural history.

Her series "Exterior Shots" documents a house in her neighbourhood.

"We have the tools to remodel ourselves and embrace life's unexpected turns," Lee says. "Beginning with drawing, I juxtapose shape and pattern and create in layers. As I move through the process everything changes again; I see differently and begin adding, editing and layering until I feel myself at home."

Lee Richmond is a multi-disciplinary artist who has exhibited across North America. She resides in Toronto, ON, a former member of Seattle's La Familia Gallery. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Fuller Museum, Brockton, MA and the Museo de la Ciudad, Guadalajara, Mexico.

Lee has a BFA from OCAD University, a BEd from York University, and studied art in Florence, Italy and Interior Design at Ryerson Polytechnic University.

The show runs at the OCAD U Window Gallery, 100 McCaul Street, Room 249, November 18, 2011- February 2012.
