OC VACCINE ADVISORY TASK FORCE UPDATE:*
  • OC Health Care Agency’s advisory vaccine task force met yesterday to consider the virus’ constraints on OC hospital beds and ICU capacity. It appears overwhelming that patients 65+ in years are the largest group filling those beds. Thus, getting out vaccines as quickly as possible to those folks will help everyone by making sure we have hospital beds for anyone who needs one. Note: OC has already distributed 50% of its allocated vaccines—not as high as we’d like but better than the state’s average of 33%. OC is working hard to develop the infrastructure to get vaccines to everyone who wants them, but must follow first CDC rules in a changing administration with changing rules (see story below), then CA Health Agency rules, which can be baffling. Know that your business leaders are pushing hard for efficiencies and safety. The goal is everyone vaccinated this Spring/Summer.

COUNTY OF ORANGE ANNOUNCES FIRST REGIONAL COVID-19 SUPER POD AT DISNEYLAND RESORT TO ADMINISTER VACCINES:*
  • In a vital step to help battle the spread of COVID-19, the County of Orange has established the first large Point-of-Dispensing (POD) site to provide COVID-19 vaccines to residents at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. Thank you Disneyland for your leadership! Read more.

GOVERNOR’S PROPOSED 2021-22 BUDGET:*
  • Newsom's proposed budget of $227 billion for 2021-22 includes $4.4 for COVID-19 Emergency Response, $4.5 billion in economic recovery, which includes $575 million in small business grants and $500 million to build more than 7,500 affordable housing units. The Governor’s office is projecting a $15 billion surplus, much different than the $54 billion deficit that was expected back in mid-year 2020, and more conservative than the Legislative Analysts’ Office one-time $26 billion surplus. You can access the proposed budget here.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE HOSTS SENATOR UMBERG AND SUPERVISOR DO:*
  • On January 8, OCBC’s Government Affairs Committee welcomed state Senator Tom Umberg and Supervisor Andrew Do. Senator Umberg discussed how his experience as a business litigator will help guide his leadership on the Senate’s important Judiciary Committee. He emphasized the need for the state to get a better hold on the pandemic, and is prioritizing support for businesses, tenants and landlords. Supervisor Do acknowledged that 2021 was off to a challenging start, but is optimistic because Orange County is experiencing lower infection rates than surrounding counties. He also stressed the importance of public and private sector collaboration. Thank you Senator Umberg and Supervisor Do!

WHAT’S IN THE BUDGET?:*
  • In addition to the $4.5 billion economic recovery plan, the Governor’s proposed $227 billion budget includes $90 billion for schools, the most in state history. $786 million would be allocated to University of California and California State University, which helps keep tuition and fees flat in 2021-22. Another $34 billion would go to budget reserves. $300 million would support vaccine distribution.
