GRANTS FOR SMALL BIZ, COVID CASES RISE, CA BUDGET, ONTARIO SOARS, AND MORE
HOT OFF THE PRESS:
4TH AND 5TH DISTRICT SUPERVISORS EXTEND GRANT PROGRAM DEADLINE:*
  • Businesses and non-profits located within OC’s Fourth and Fifth Supervisorial Districts that have been adversely impacted by COVID-19 are eligible to apply for a grant of up to $10,000. The deadline for applications has been extended to Sunday, July 5 at 5:00 p.m. Start an application here.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HOSPITALS PREPARE FOR RISE IN COVID-19 CASES:* 
  • After a 17.6% increase of COVID-related hospitalizations over the last three days, Southern California hospitals have constructed a plan of action to support the increased number of COVID-19 patients. Alternative care sites are being considered.

GOVERNOR NEWSOM SIGNS CA BUDGET CLOSING $54.3 BILLION DEFICIT:*
  • Governor Newsom signed a $202.1 billion California state budget that provides emergency pandemic funds, expands unemployment assistance, and authorizes billions of dollars of cuts spurred by COVID-19. The budget gives the Governor authority to withhold funding to cities and counties that do not follow the state's guidelines to slow the spread of the virus. The budget closes a $54.3 billion deficit by temporarily raising taxes on certain businesses.

ADVOCACY UPDATES:
OCBC SUPPORTS BILL PROVIDING TAX CREDIT FOR PPE:*
  • OCBC is proud to support Congressman Harley Rouda’s Helping Businesses Reopen Safely Act of 2020. This bill will help keep employees and customers safe by providing a tax credit of up to $25,000 to small businesses, nonprofits and local governments annually to purchase personal protective equipment. In a press release announcing the bill, OCBC President and CEO Lucy Dunn stated, “businesses are working hard to keep employees and customers safe and they should be rewarded for doing the right thing.” OCBC urges OC’s congressional delegation to lend their support for this crucial legislation. OCBC PROVIDES OC CITIES WITH RECOMMENDATIONS TO SUPPORT LOCAL ECONOMY:
  • OCBC has sent a letter to every OC city outlining recommendations for safely reopening their city and supporting their local economy. These recommendations include encouraging residents to follow the state’s face mask order, expanding communications infrastructure networks, supporting new construction and developing opportunity zones. OC DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ISSUES RESOURCES TO BRING AWARENESS TO 2020 CENSUS:*
  • California is anticipated to lose $1,950 per person in annual funding due to under counting in 2020 Census. OCDE aims to reverse the withdrawal of funding and advocates for community leaders to spread awareness. In efforts to support the census, OCDE cultivated a comprehensive resource collection including: school-based toolkit, student-made social media graphics, and letters & flyers in various languages.

CAL STATE FULLERTON REPORTS IMPROVEMENT IN ORANGE COUNTY’S ECONOMY:*
  • Cal State Fullerton's Business Expectation reported significant improvements, suggesting a turning point in Orange County's economy. Survey results indicated that almost a quarter of OC businesses expect to return to pre-pandemic levels and increase their labor force by the end of the year. The number of companies planning to cut jobs fell by over 36% in the outlook for the third quarter.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE ADMINISTRATION RELIEF FOR U.S. COMPANIES DURING PANDEMIC:*
  • ITA is temporarily reducing the cost of export services to stimulate the export of U.S. non-COVID-19 treatment related goods until September 30, 2020. U.S. & Foreign Commercial Service will minimize fees up to 100 percent for small and medium-sized businesses and organizations, and up to 50 percent for large companies. 

OUT SMART DISASTER CAMPAIGN WILL HELP YOUR BUSINESS:* 
  • JP Morgan Chase and other stakeholders have launched Out Smart Disaster, a statewide awareness campaign focused on providing California businesses with key resources to help them prepare for and recover from all types of disasters, including pandemics.

ONTARIO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT SOARING BACK:* 
  • Ontario airport saw a significant increase in air travel for the month of July and will increase its flight schedule to 44 departures a day. The airport has implemented an advanced sanitation protocol with the use of powerful antimicrobial technology, hand sanitizing stations, and mandating the use of face coverings while onsight and during flights.

OCTA PLANS FOR 100% ZERO-EMISSION BUSES BY 2040:* 
  • In aid of a sustainable future, OCTA board approved a plan for all zero-emission buses by 2040. The plan will now be submitted to the California Air Resources Board for further approval. OCTA is currently evaluating both hydrogen fuel-cell eclectic buses and plug-in-battery-electric buses to decide what technology best meets sustainability goals.

  • Disneyland unveils plans to transform Splash Mountain log ride into a new theme based on Disney’s first animated African-American princess,“Princess & the Frog”. Splash Mountain’s original Imagineer, Tony Baxter will help advise the project makeover.
