BARS CLOSED, RESTAURANTS ORDERED TO CEASE INDOOR OPERATIONS:
  • Ahead of July 4th amid rising COVID-19 cases, CA has ordered some businesses to cease indoor operations for at least the next 3 weeks. Bars are to close completely, while restaurants are allowed to continue outdoor dining. Read More.

STATE BEACHES CLOSE PARKING AHEAD OF HOLIDAY WEEKEND, LOCAL BEACHES TO CLOSE:
  • CA is closing parking at state run beaches to try and curb an influx of visitors over the holiday weekend. Local beaches are considering similar measures while Laguna Beach already announced closures. Continue reading.

ORANGE COUNTY CITIES PLAN MODIFIED FOURTH OF JULY FESTIVITIES:*
  • Even while the Governor encourages all cities to cancel July 4th festivities, OC cities have taken additional measures to ensure the health and safety of the community for Fourth of July. Amid the cancellation of all large public gatherings and events, the cities have planned COVID-19-conscious celebrations. View here. And check to make sure they’re still on.

CALTRANS ENTERS AGREEMENT WITH XPRESSWEST FOR SOCAL TO VEGAS HIGH-SPEED TRAIN:
  • The new train will run from Apple Valley to Vegas, and is being built with private funding. The project will create an estimated 10,000 construction and 500 post-construction jobs, along with reducing carbon emissions by 300,000 metric tons a year. read more.

4TH AND 5TH DISTRICT SUPERVISORS EXTEND GRANT PROGRAM DEADLINE:
  • Businesses and non-profits located within OC’s Fourth and Fifth Supervisorial Districts that have been adversely impacted by COVID-19 are eligible to apply for a grant of up to $10,000. The deadline for applications has been extended to Sunday, July 5 at 5:00 p.m. Start an application here.

THE CITY OF MISSION VIEJO EXEMPLIFIES OUTSTANDING LOCAL LEADERSHIP:
  • Mission Viejo created a series of “Mission Viejo Strong” COVID-19 videos encouraging residents to shop local and describing their economic development and reopening efforts. Mission Viejo also launched a new sports tourism website to attract business and visitors. MV is expanding the installation of about 4.7 miles of fiber optic cable/conduit along city arterials. OCBC SUPPORTS ROUDA’S BILL PROVIDING TAX CREDIT FOR PPE:
  • OCBC supports Congressman Harley Rouda’s Helping Businesses Reopen Safely Act of 2020. This bill will help keep employees and customers safe by providing an annual tax credit of up to $25,000 to small businesses, nonprofits and local governments to purchase personal protective equipment. OCBC’s Lucy Dunn stated, “businesses are working hard to keep employees and customers safe and they should be rewarded for doing the right thing.” OCBC urges OC’s congressional delegation to lend its support for this legislation. Read more.

PARTICIPATE IN STANFORD SMALL BUSINESS SURVEY: 
  • Every year, the Stanford Latino Entrepreneurship Initiative, in collaboration with the Latino Business Action Network, surveys thousands of Latino business owners across the country to measure the critical impact Latino entrepreneurs have on the US economy. However, this year, the survey will include non-minority business owners.

TRUMP SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER WEIGHTING JOB SKILLS OVER DEGREES IN FEDERAL HIRING:
  • President Trump signed an executive order that reforms job hiring to shift emphasis from degree-based merits to skills- and competency-based qualifications for federal positions.

OC DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ISSUES RESOURCES TO BRING AWARENESS TO 2020 CENSUS:
  • California is anticipated to lose $1,950 per person in annual funding due to under counting in 2020 Census. OCDE aims to reverse the withdrawal of funding and advocates for community leaders to spread awareness. In efforts to support the census, OCDE cultivated a comprehensive resource collection including: school-based toolkit, student-made social media graphics, and letters & flyers in various languages.

BANK OF AMERICA DONATIONS HELP LAUNCH GREEN MOVEMENT:
  • In a collaboration with Second Harvest Food Bank and Alegria Fresh, Bank of America contributed $150,000 to launch Alegria SoxxBoxx Farm in Irvine. Repurposing unused man-made surfaces into urban regenerative microfarms, the first-of-its-kinda concept grows zero-waste, nutrient-dense produce, sold for a profit that will help purchase food seven-fold for thousands in need.

CHARTER COMMUNICATIONS INCREASES LATINO PROGRAMMING:
  • Charter Communications propels its mission in providing a diverse programming experience with an expansive TV lineup featuring five new Latino TV networks. These stations provide educational programming in Spanish and English, at no extra cost. The programs feature channels dedicated to teaching English as a second language, parent-approved entertainment, and the first Spanish-language concert platform.  

SANTA MARGARITA WATER DISTRICT ON TAP:
  • In SMWD’s June 2020 eNewsletter, “On Tap, Water We Up To?”, SMWD highlights its month’s achievements. Recently, SMWD Board of Directors approved a smaller budget with $1.8 million in reductions and no rate increase during COVID-19. The eNewsletter also features articles on its 2020 Water Quality Report, DIY Leak Checks, project updates, and more.
