WHICH TWO-YEAR BILLS WERE DEFEATED?
We’re only one month into 2022 and OCBC’s advocacy team has already been hard at work securing several legislative victories for the business community. Bills from 2021 that were not outright defeated carried over to 2022 but needed to pass their legislative house of origin by Jan. 31 or be dead for the session. Priority bills that were defeated or advanced are detailed below.
  • The single-payer health care bill, AB 1400, died without receiving a vote on the Assembly floor, ensuring that businesses were spared from the biggest tax increase in state history. Read OCBC’s letter.
  • A bill diluting local voices on the Air Quality Management District, SB 342, fell one vote short of passing thanks to abstentions from all OC Senators. Read the coalition letter.
  • SB 213, a bill imposing astronomical financial burdens on health care providers by unnecessarily overhauling their workers’ compensation system, cleared the Senate by one vote. Thank you Senators Bates, Min and Umberg for abstaining. Read the coalition letter.
  • AB 257, which would threaten the fast food franchise business model by exposing franchisors to unprecedented liability while restricting franchisee hiring decisions, passed the Assembly by just one vote. Thank you to all OC Assemblymembers for voting no or abstaining. Learn more about AB 257.
