HOT OFF THE PRESS
OPINION: APP-BASED SERVICES HELPED BUSINESSES SURVIVE THE PANDEMIC:
-
In 2020, OCBC proudly supported Proposition 22, which voters passed to preserve app-based drivers’ status as independent contractors. With Prop 22 in effect, rideshare and food delivery platforms provided billions in earnings for displaced or struggling workers while keeping restaurants and retailers afloat. Read more of this op-ed by Jay King, President & CEO of the California Black Chamber of Commerce.
INPUT NEEDED AS OC PREPARES FOR 2021 REDISTRICTING:
-
OC’s five supervisorial districts will be redrawn this year to ensure that every district’s population is roughly equal. The County currently receives input from businesses, community leaders and the public on district boundaries. Get involved by attending a meeting or submitting a public comment.
KOTKIN: CA IS CREATING “OLIGARCHIC SOCIALISM”:
-
Joel Kotkin, a fellow in urban studies at Chapman University, writes that CA is weakening the middle class by depriving them of upward mobility, providing guaranteed income instead of investing in businesses, jobs and economic development. Political priorities are not aligned with remedying the state’s highly unequal economy, but instead exacerbate it, as climate change policies lead to higher costs for housing, electricity and fuel. Read more from Kotkin, including a quote from Lucy Dunn, OCBC President & CEO.
LATEST OCHCA COVID-19 RESOURCES:
-
CA Department of Public Health is tracking variants as they emerge and spread. The Delta (B.1.617.2) variant has been upgraded to a Variant of Concern. Individuals eligible for vaccination should get vaccinated to avoid contracting the virus and to help prevent future mutations. Masks will also remain mandatory in specific settings such as indoors K-12 schools and public transit. Learn more.

OCBC JOINS NATIONAL CALL FOR BROADBAND INVESTMENT:
-
OCBC and 196 business community leaders nationwide urged Congress to prioritize digital infrastructure investment when considering infrastructure legislation. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how critical it is for healthcare providers, students, government and others to embrace digital tools—but has also exposed gaps in America’s connectivity. Read more about the steps the coalition asked Congress to take to modernize digital infrastructure, including emphasis on leveraging private sector investment and addressing affordability.
CA TO EXTEND EVICTION MORATORIUM THROUGH SEPTEMBER:
-
The Governor and Legislature announced an extension of CA’s statewide eviction moratorium through Sept. 30, 2021. The proposal fully reimburses landlords for past and prospective payments. It would also prohibit cities and counties from adopting new eviction delays through March 2022. Read CA Apartment Association’s analysis of the extension here.
SB 12 WOULD KILL HOUSING CONSTRUCTION:
-
"Lack of housing supply in all price ranges is the underlying driver increasing homelessness, reducing housing affordability, higher rents, longer commutes, a dying middle class and, without question, the ‘diversity, equity and inclusion’ issue of our generation: especially when Black and Latino communities have the lowest homeownership rates since the 1930s." Adding more barriers to new housing construction is not okay. Read more and click here to see OCBC’s letter opposing SB 12 unless amended.
