UCI ALUMNUS WINS NOBEL PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY:
  • Congratulations to UCI alumnus David W.C. MacMillan for being awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work in developing better catalysts for converting and building molecules. MacMillan, now the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry at Princeton University, shares the prize with Benjamin List from the Max Planck Institute in Mulheim an der Ruhr, Germany. MacMillan was during his graduate studies at UCI by Larry Overman, Distinguished Professor emeritus of chemistry. The Nobel Prize winner has another connection to UCI: While at UC Berkeley and later at Caltech, he was Ph.D. advisor to Vy Dong, UCI professor of chemistry. Learn more.

  • Orange County Department of Education’s (OCDE) Orange County Together is nominated for the Leadership in Public Service Award! Orange County Together is a task force of OCDE, 28 OC school districts and local public health agencies to develop a guide to safely reopening schools and oversee delivery of more than 12,000 vaccines to education personnel. Despite the pandemic, college and career indicators remained relatively high and 90.4% of seniors during the 2019-20 school year graduated. Orange County Together’s guide and vaccination campaign helped more than 600 schools reopen in a safe and responsible manner.
AUHSD’S GOOGLE CAREER CERTIFICATE PROGRAM:
  • Anaheim Union High School District’s (AUHSD) Google Career Certificate Program is nominated for the Public-Private Partnership Award! AUHSD partnered with Google to become the first public school district nationwide to offer Google Career Certificates in the fields of Data Analytics, IT Support and Project Management, preparing students for entry-level roles in high-growth fields. Certificates can be credited toward community colleges and four-year degrees. This program helps Anaheim students find high-wage jobs while teaching skills needed for a strong local workforce.

  • OneLegacy Foundation recently announced, in partnership with UCLA Health, the success of its first two kidney transplants in a OneLegacy-funded clinical trial with the potential for no immunosuppressive drugs. This medical feat will help open the door for safer and more effective organ transplants for the thousands of Americans on the transplant waiting list. Gov. Newsom also recently signed AB 1374, a bill that will strengthen the partnership between the CA DMV and Donate Life CA to improve DMV organ registration language – ultimately helping encourage more Californians to say “yes” to organ, eye and tissue donation to save more lives each year.

Nicolet Alegado also known as Nicci, has been with OCBC for three and a half years. She was first drawn to OCBC by the diversity of both the leadership team and Board of Directors.
