ICYMI! 2021-22 ORANGE COUNTY COMMUNITY INDICATORS REPORT ROLLOUT:
  • Last week, OCBC virtually released its 2021-22 OC Community Indicators, which track the region's health and prosperity and show where the county is performing well and making progress. Dr. Wallace Walrod, OCBC's Chief Economic Advisor, and a panel of experts dove into the report's findings and what it means for OC's future. "Our view is we're not returning to the pre-COVID status quo, but we're adapting to this next normal, in terms of a new economy, different labor markets, and workplaces obviously are going to be quite a bit different in most cases," said Dr. Walrod. ADVOCACY
GOVERNOR SIGNS TWO MAJOR PRO-HOUSING BILLS:
  • Last week, Gov. Newsom signed SB 9 and SB 10 into law, delivering a victory for housing advocates. SB 9 streamlines the process for homeowners building a duplex or splitting their current lot to build more homes. SB 10 creates a voluntary process for local governments to simplify approval of multi-unit housing near transit or in urban infill areas. OCBC urges the Legislature to continue efforts to address CA’s massive workforce housing shortfall.
TURNING RED TAPE INTO RED CARPET NOMINEE SPOTLIGHT
COUNTY OF ORANGE & HOMEAID OC’S YALE NAVIGATION CENTER:
  • County of Orange’s partnership with HomeAid Orange County to build the Yale Navigation Center is nominated for the Public-Private Partnership Award! Yale Navigation Center is a 425-bed emergency navigation center opened in December 2020 for homeless adults providing access to services and housing opportunities. Due to the pandemic, construction of the Center was completed on an accelerated schedule to more quickly assist the vulnerable. Despite a construction supply shortage and other challenges, the project came in under budget.

CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH’S ONLINE DATA DASHBOARDS:
  • City of Newport Beach’s Online Data Dashboards are nominated for the Incorporating Innovative Technology Award! The Dashboards are an interactive mapping/data app that enables residents to view all City-related activity going on around them, including construction projects, recent police/fire response calls, flight paths and noise, and short-term lodging rentals, in real-time. The Dashboards help residents track over 3,000 active building permits, 230 planning applications and over 1,500 short-term lodging rentals, as well as stay informed about crime and police activity.
