Meet OCNI's Newest Staff
Terri-Lynn Woods will be joining the Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries (OCNI) on May 3, 2021 as Manager, Indigenous Engagement and Special Projects. Terri-Lynn will lead our Indigenous Engagement and Communications program as well as other OCNI initiatives in recruiting, training, and placing young people in STEM and skilled trades positions across the nuclear industry.
Terri-Lynn will support Bruce Power’s Indigenous Relations Suppliers Network (IRSN) and OPG’s Indigenous Opportunities Network (ION) programs and will manage OCNI’s partnerships with the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) and the First Nations Power Authority (FNPA). She will also support OCNI members working toward various levels of their Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) certifications.
Terri-Lynn is of Metis descent and brings a passion for effective and meaningful nuclear industry engagement with Indigenous communities to this role, combined with 16 years of supply chain and utility experience.
One of Terri-Lynn’s first assignments with OCNI will be to provide project management services to the OCNI/FNPA Skills Development Fund project with the Ministry of Labor, Training, and Skills Development (MLTSD) to recruit, train and place Indigenous people and women in skilled trades positions in Ontario’s nuclear sector.

OCNI is seeking a Manager, Canadian SMR Supply Chain Development, to develop a pan-Canadian SMR supply chain, and promote use of advanced manufacturing methods to reduce SMR costs.
We are also looking for two summer student positions thanks to funding from Canada Summer Jobs. Deadline to apply is noon May 7, 2021.

New insights into N95's COVID-19 filter efficiency |
When COVID-19 was declared a pandemic in March 2020, Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Parans Paranthaman suddenly found himself working from home like millions of others.
Paranthaman's research results on the N95 filter media, recently published in ACS Applied Polymer Materials, outline the science behind what led to ORNL's successful production of material on the CFTF's precursor production line. The technology was later transitioned under user agreements to two industry partners—Cummins and DemeTECH—for commercial use, leading to the supply of millions of masks throughout the U.S., as well as adding thousands of jobs.

OVSC hosts vaccine safety event
In partnership with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce’s Vaccination Support Council (OVSC), Bruce Power will host a virtual discussion with Dr. Ben Chan on the global health pandemic response, vaccine safety, and reflections from the frontlines. The live virtual event will be held on Monday, May 3, at 2 p.m.
Dr. Ben Chan will be joined by Rocco Rossi, President & CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, James Scongack, Bruce Power’s Executive Vice-President of Corporate Affairs & Operational Services, and Garrick Tiplady, Managing Director at Facebook Canada. Scongack and Tiplady serve as co-chairs of the OVSC.

Modernizing Canada's Radioactive Waste Policy
|
In November 2020, the Minister of Natural Resources Canada launched an inclusive engagement process to modernize Canada’s policy for the management of radioactive waste. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) officials are leading the engagement process with the support of other federal government departments with responsibilities for the management of radioactive waste. NRCan’s goal is to inform a modernized policy that continues to reflect international practices in the area of radioactive waste management, the best available science, and the values and principles of Canadians, including Indigenous Peoples.
To ensure that all interested Canadians have an opportunity to share their views and perspectives, the timeline for comments on the discussion papers has been extended to May 31, 2021. Engagement on the radioactive waste policy will not end there. Following engagement on the discussion papers, a “What We Heard” report and draft policy will be released for public comment. NRCan will work to ensure there is sufficient time, following the release of the report, for further meaningful feedback.

We're Watching for Bad Actors

No industry is excluded from the infiltration of counterfeit, fraudulent, and suspect items (CFSIs); however, the impact of CFSIs’ consequences can vary. It may be tempting to buy a lookalike product for a fraction of the price, but is it worth it? The presence of CFSIs in the nuclear supply chain have detrimental consequences for not only the industry but those who are handling the product, the public, and the overall environment. It is imperative that we all play a part in the prevention of CFSIs from entering our industry.
Together, OCNI and COG are presenting Bad Actors: The 2021 CFSI Workshop, May 5 – 6, 2021. This workshop will take place over two half-days and focuses on identifying, preventing, and examining the lessons learned from the use of CFSIs. The CFSI Workshop will equip your business with the tools and knowledge to meet both industry and regulatory expectations with confidence. Abstract
In 2020 the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) assembled a committee to provide guidance to the U.S. Department of Energy, and others, that are aligned with the objective of constructing a pilot plant in the United States that produces electricity from fusion at the lowest possible capital cost, i.e. a “Fusion Pilot Plant”. The report’s finding will be presented by three of the committee members, followed by a Q&A session with participants. The primary recommendation of the study is that “For the United States to be a leader in fusion and to make an impact on the transition to a low-carbon emission electrical system by 2050, the Department of Energy and the private sector should produce net electricity in a fusion pilot plant in the United States in the 2035—2040 timeframe.”

The directory demonstrates the capabilities of the Canadian isotope sector companies and their leading international expertise as well as highlights the potential export growth that the sector is primed to take advantage of. Medical isotopes are an essential part of modern healthcare where they are used to diagnose and treat disease, sterilize a range of medical equipment and enable research. On April 20, 2021, OCNI and the Fusion Energy Council of Canada (FECC) presented a webinar on the fusion technology status in Canada and around the world. Controlled nuclear fusion is often described as “creating a sun on earth". Axel Meisen, Interim President, FECC, and Robert Fedosejevs, Professor, University of Alberta, shared an exceptional presentation detailing the clean-energy production potential of fusion, with a comparative overview of fission and fusion fundamentals. We had an in-depth Q&A session where Allan Offenberger (Professor Emeritus, University of Alberta and; Founding President, FECC) discussed the implications of fusion energy deployment and uses for business, government, and the environment. OCNI's Advanced Technologies and Processes (ATP) Council hosted a special focused Cybersecurity Day on April 26, 2021. In a two part event, attendees heard from expert cybersecurity, intelligence, researchers and government panelists provide an introduction to cybersecurity, along with their visions for the future of nuclear cybersecurity with new threats and race to develop the next generation of cybersecurity technologies. Each session ended with a panel discussion, where we raised awareness of current Canadian, and international standards on cybersecurity. |
