Soil Science Outreach at Lacey Twp High School

The soil beneath our feet is more than just dirt—it's a complex, living system that supports ecosystems, sustains agriculture, and records Earth’s history. Lacey Township High School students in Mr. Conklin and Ms. Audet’s science classes recently discovered just how dynamic and important soil is by participating in a two-day outreach program led by Becky Laboy, Education Outreach Coordinator with the Ocean County Soil Conservation District. Celebrating Environmental Excellence: The NJ Envirothon and MATES Continued Success

This year, the New Jersey Envirothon once again showcased the exceptional talent and dedication of students, with MATES Academy (Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science) demonstrating their unparalleled expertise. MATES Academy, Team 1, secured First Place, while MATES Academy, Team 2, earned a commendable Second Place. This outstanding achievement highlights the consistent commitment to environmental education at MATES. Read more in our Blog.

Soil Health - a Student's Quest for Answers


At the Ocean County Soil Conservation District, we're always excited to see local initiatives that promote understanding and care for our natural resources - especially the soil! That's why we were particularly interested in a recent project by Mateo Gonzalez, a student at Kean University's Kean-Ocean campus. Enrolled in Principles of Environmental Soil Science course this past Spring 2025, Mateo undertook a study comparing the health of forest soil with his "backyard" soil, right here in Ocean County.
