Wildfire Resilient Construction for Building Enclosures

One-hour WEBINAR

Thursday, October 12, 2023 | 11:00 a.m. - Noon (ET) | 1.0 PDH

PRESENTER: Robin Urquhart, MBSc

Building Science Consultant | RDH Building Science

PRESENTATION OVERVIEW:

Wildfires present a significant risk to residential structures in many regions across North America. Wildfire risk mitigation of the structure can be considered fundamentally an enclosure issue, yet it is rarely part of the design brief or considered in projects. The increased severity and frequency of wildfires are prompting government at all levels to review wildfire construction legislation and recommendations.

Engineers have a duty to the public interest to raise the issue of wildfire mitigation for relevant projects. Robin Urquhart will provide information on when to consider wildfire risk and what to consider in mitigation from a building enclosure perspective.

KEY TOPICS EXPLORED:

  • Wildland Urban Interface
  • Wildfire behavior overview
  • Wildfire resilient construction resources
  • Enclosure mitigation measures
  • Cost and procurement considerations

KEY TAKEAWAYS FOR PARTICIPANTS:

  • Understanding what areas are at risk for wildfire
  • Introduction to various wildfire resilient construction resources
  • Introduction to wildfire resilient enclosure design
  • Understanding when and how to incorporate wildfire resilient enclosure measures into your projects
