Beyond the Screen:

Connecting in a Virtual Age

In our modern digital age, most of us spend our days communicating through sterile glass screens and typed text. In Ayurveda, this constant digital connection is ruled by Vata (the air and ether elements). When Vata dominates, it leaves us completely "twired"—that exhausting state of being simultaneously tired and wired, unable to disconnect from our devices even when we desperately need rest. When Vata imbalance permeates all systems deeply, it can eventually lead to systemic weakening and disease.

The truth is, we can simulate almost anything in virtual reality today—but you can never download or digitize the physical reality of a massage. A screen can mirror a thought, but it can never settle a running nervous system, release bound muscle and fascia, or replicate the profound healing power of human touch. Where the digital world is purely air and ether, specialized bodywork is the ultimate earth element—the precise, grounding antidote to our modern ungroundedness.

Clearly, I am no neophyte, but while I am using this very virtual medium to reach you today, I want to use it to step past the screen and share a physical reality. Featured in this issue is a maternal family photo from the 1970s. That is me standing behind my grandmother, Nonna Rosa.

Long before our screen-mediated technology, quiet moments with her in a nursing home taught me just how much we lose when we forget the language of the physical world.

Let’s step past the screen together on a journey through time—from our present digital rush, back through ancestral memory, and into a space of sacred timelessness.

From the Mills to the Massage Table:

How this work chose me

My journey as a massage therapist and healer has deep roots—not just in my childhood, but in the survival and resilience of my ancestors. Both sets of grandparents emigrated from the same locale in Campania, Italy. On my father's side, my family was woven right into the struggle of the historic 1912 Bread & Roses Labor Strike in the textile mills of Lawrence, Massachusetts.

My maternal grandparents, Nonna Rosa and Nonno Michele, eventually bought some land and a small farmhouse in Methuen’s Pleasant Valley, where they cultivated a life working the land as farmers while my grandfather balanced other local trades. Nonna Rosa is who I felt most connected to.

Growing up, my grandparents were a mystery. I sensed the heavy emotional weight and longing they had to push aside for the sake of survival. Their lives were tough for sure, but they carved out a vibrant new foundation here—even as my grandmother carried the quiet sadness of missing the mother and family she left behind in Italy.

Later I understood that processing that level of daily stress and the bittersweet reality of leaving home wasn't a luxury they had. Future generations like mine are the ones who have the space to unpack, process, and heal those inherited imprints.

Because I grew up absorbing the unspoken emotional energy around me, I developed a deep sensitivity to others. Today, that sensitivity is my greatest tool as a healer. I channel my family's legacy of hard work and resilience into helping others process their pain, integrate mind and body, and find relief on the massage table.

I chose the natural medicine track instead of the conventional one, realizing my own path to healing would be a journey of experiential, embodied learning that took root right in my teens.

When Nonna Rosa was in a nursing home spending her last years confined to a wheelchair most of the time, I would sometimes gently massage her neck and shoulders during my visits. She would close her eyes and sigh. It gave me a deep, anchoring sense of purpose just knowing I could be helpful.

The touch enabled a kind of non-verbal communication between us that words alone could not have conveyed. It became beautifully evident that this unspoken language was wholly felt. Without a single word, our silent exchange communicated the only message that truly mattered:

“I care about you. I want to ease your pain.”

Who in your life needs a gentle touch or a comforting gesture today? Words often fail us when we want to express our deepest care. In those moments, actions speak volumes.

Don't hesitate to reach out for my services if you or someone you care about needs to unburden the shoulders and lighten the load of stress and pain with skilled, medically-informed therapeutic touch.

Honoring Our Past,

Creating Our Future

I heard the phrase that we are who we are because of our past. While there is truth in that, it is equally true that we possess the ultimate freedom and ability to consciously create ourselves. If the past ever feels like a limiting cage of sorts, we have the power to rewrite the story and create who we want to be. We are not simply a static product of our past; we are the active expansion of our future.

The vital question to ask ourselves as the seasons change is not just where we came from, but "Who are we becoming?" or "Who do we wish to become?"

Another truism for those who like me, frame life as a sacred journey of learning and growth, is that no matter how much work you do, how many degrees you have under your belt, how much you have accomplished in life, if you think you are so enlightened, go spend some time with your family of origin and you'll be brought back down to earth mighty quick!! All the reactionary patterns, defenses, and family dynamics will remind you how much you have yet to learn or master!

I had a vivid, humbling reminder of this exact conditioning this past summer during a road trip with my sisters. Even with decades of clinical practice, bodywork credentials, and mindfulness training under my belt, I watched with stark clarity how easily the old childhood dynamics, ancestral imprints, and default defensive stances could pull us right back into a state of hyper-vigilance and limitation. It made me realize that so much of what we inherit from our past—even the well-meaning survival scripts of our ancestors—needs to be consciously identified, reexamined, and upgraded.

Upgrading those inherited survival scripts is not work we can do in a vacuum. We fundamentally need one another to co-regulate, release our old armor, and step into our true alignment. In my own practice, I operate under a simple, absolute truth:

All healing is based on relationship.

To step out of the hyper-vigilance of the past and into active expansion, we need steady guides, intentional spaces, and conscious tools. This is precisely why I structure my clinical offerings to walk alongside you as a guide to your expansion, helping you navigate the bridge toward who you wish to become.

This month's theme is a call to action to deepen your journey by exploring how you relate to time, your ancestry, and the shared elements of the earth and your own physical body

.

The Sacred "Everywhen"

October ushers in a kind of dreamtime, when our daydreams and night dreams grow vivid, playing out undigested unconscious material on the night stage. This is certainly fodder for the All Hallows’ Eve (Halloween) grist mill at month’s end—a time often described as when the veil between worlds is thinnest and we may experience a deeper connection with the ancestral spirit world. Yet, I deeply love the "Everywhen" perspective from the Indigenous Australian tradition:

In the Indigenous Australian worldview, the Dreaming is neither a specific season on a calendar nor a historical creation story locked away in the past. Instead, it represents an ongoing, timeless reality that weaves together the past, the present, and the future simultaneously. Rather than viewing time as a straight line, it is experienced as an interconnected loop—a concept beautifully captured by the term "everywhen." (And let's be clear, this is a far cry from the casual, indifferent "whenever" we hear so often today!)

This means that the Ancestral Spirits who shaped the landscape are not gone; their presence, power, and law remain actively alive within the earth, the stars, and the natural elements today. Time, place, and spirit are perpetually intertwined, allowing us to step into and connect with this eternal reality at any given moment.

The Ancestral Legacy Package:

I Came, I Saw, I Concord

In honor of my own roots, Indigenous People's Day, and our local landscape, I want to step into that spirit of grounding ourselves in the physical world. I’m excited to roll out a special Ancestral Legacy Wellness Package for the month of October.

Henry David Thoreau famously went to Walden Pond to live deliberately and root himself in nature. My custom t-shirt design pays tribute to that philosophy with a local play on words:

I Came, I Saw, I Concord.

The Offer:

  • Commit to your Autumn Wellness: Purchase a 3- or 5-session series package of any specialized massage and bodywork modality to anchor your system through the seasonal shift, and take home the custom shirt as a physical reminder to step away from the screen and live deliberately.

Click here for the Purchase Service page to choose your 60- or 90-minute series package.

Nourishing Your Taproots:

Vata-Soothing Remedies & Video

Plants that have taproots feature a single, dominant, thick main root that plunges straight down into the dark soil, anchoring the plant while smaller lateral branches split off its sides to seek nourishment. Our physical bodies share this exact architecture.

Our deep blood vessels, nerve pathways, and lymphatic systems are the literal taproots of the human form, channeling life force downward to keep us grounded.

As autumn’s cold sets in, our natural instinct is to migrate indoors where these anatomical taproots contract, which causes atrophy over years. The dropped temperatures reflexively cause us to pull upward, tightening our shoulders and completely disconnecting from the intricate nerve networks of our feet, which are meant to root us to the earth. If we do what trees do instead and ground our roots downward, it will help prevent this bracing pattern and the resulting feelings of a stagnant, tense, and ungrounded internal system.

You can do this by practicing good daily habits (called Dinacharya in Ayurveda), like the gentle movement in my video below, while also considering these intentional self-care upgrades to consciously nourish your foundation from the inside out.

Botanical allies like Ashwagandha—which survives harsh elements precisely because it develops a massive, fleshy, grounding taproot—teach our nervous systems how to anchor themselves. Ashwagandha's great medicine therefore is to support your internal terrain. It is one of those "master" herbs designed to circulate trapped energy and vital fluids, soothe an overactive nervous system, and deeply nourish your metabolism, tissues, and joints.

Explore these hand-picked, professional-grade remedies via the clinical guide below, featuring:

  • Ashwagandha (Capsule or Powder-form) - Ultimate Anchor
  • Vitamin D3 + K2: Light Replacement
  • Vitamin B12 / Methylcobalamin: Neurological and Cellular Shield
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Vascular and Joint Lubricant
  • External Oleation & Targeted Moisturizing
  • Magnesium Glycinate or Malate: Metabolism and Sleep
  • Zinc Bisglycinate + Vitamin C: Seasonal Immune Resilience

Flashbacks and Fast Forwards: The Routes of Elemental Medicine

Reexamining our personal lineages often leads us to look at the broader historical frameworks that shape how we heal. My humble beginnings bless me with a personal journey toward natural medicine that feels incredibly rich because it is deeply intertwined with ancient traditions that have navigated the elements of body and mind for centuries.

To explore how these global systems—from Avicenna to the wisdom of Prakriti and Unani Tibb—converge to inform modern holistic care, I invite you to read my full global history essay:
