KHABAROVSK

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk is the second largest city in the Russian Far East with a population of 600,000. It is situated on the Amur River not far from the Chinese border and is one of the major stops on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Khabarovsk is rich in culture and history and is a popular tourist destination. The Regional Lore Museum features rare exhibits, includuing a Steller sea cow skeleton while the Khabarovsk Art Museum hosts a stunning collection of early Russian icons. Beautiful 19th-century architecture in downtown Khabarovsk gives the city a very European atmosphere. Overlooking the Amur River, the city's waterfront park, featuring many shops and restaurants, is a popular place for a leisurely stroll.

The Khabarovsk region is one of Russia's most biologically diverse areas and home to such endangered species as the Siberian tiger and Amur leopard. Enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the Boshehehtsirsky Nature Reserve.

Not far from Khabarovsk are situated Nanai native villages; among them, Sikhachi-Alyan is renowned for its ancient riverside petroglyphs.

The Khabarovsk Airport accommodates international flights to and from Europe, South Korea, Central Asia and China. Commencing in the summer of 2013, Yakutia Airlines will establish direct flights between Khabarovsk and Anchorage, Alaska.

RECOMMENDED READING

the-tiger a-true-story-of-vengeance-and-survival

The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival by John Vaillant is about a man-eating tiger incident that happened in the 1990s in the Russian Far East, where most of the world's Siberian (Amur) tigers live. The remarkable thing about this book is that it's not simply an adventure story. The book also provides a fascinating examination of the tragic and complex social and political challenges of the post-Perestroika Russian Far East, the natural history of tigers and the taiga, and the cultural and spiritual beliefs of the local native people. If you enjoy investigative journalism, social history, geography and natural writing, put this book on your reading list.
