Pre-Health Professions Conference
Ignite: Lighting the Future

Undergraduate students from Houston and surrounding areas are invited to attend our 2nd Annual Pre-Health Professions Conference hosted by the ODI and Student National Medical Association (SNMA). This is a unique experience where the attendees will have an opportunity to learn about all the six UTHealth schools. They will hear from each respective admissions school dean, network with fellow pre-health students, UTHealth students, faculty and staff, as well as participate in various workshop activities.

Black History Month Program

Attendees will be treated to musical selections and a special address from keynote speaker, Valerae Lewis , MD, Chair, Department of Orthopaedic Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Aspirations in Medical Professions (AMP)

Our K-12 outreach program, AMP, welcomes students from 6 different Yes Prep High Schools to McGovern Medical School. The students will be joining us for the day to learn about medical school and participate in hands-on activities. We still need volunteers! Please sign up today.

Dr. David Acosta Visits McGovern Medical School

In January 2018, Dr. David Acosta, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer for the AAMC, graciously joined a group of students, faculty, and leaders at McGovern Medical School for an informal breakfast roundtable discussion on Diversity and Inclusion in medicine.
Fall Diversity Awareness Week

Faculty, students and staff came together to celebrate diversity during this dynamic week. We began by exploring and learning about some of the greatest wonders of the world, while feasting on some great food from around the globe. On Tuesday, Dr. Thomas Cole expanded our minds with his award winning film, The Strange Demise of Jim Crow, which explored the clandestine desegregation in Houston. On Wednesday, Dr. Dakota educated us on current issues in caring for transgender patients and their families. We ended the week with a group of diverse women sharing their experiences and perspectives, as medical students, with respect to culture, religion, gender, sexuality and more.
Veterans Day Program

Each year, McGovern Medical School honors members of the UTHealth community who have served the nation in the United States military. This year, Dr. Christopher Stephens, Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and flight surgeon in the National Guard, shared with us his experience in Iraq, where he served flying combat MEDEVAC operations. He also shared some remarkable stories from Hurricane Harvey, during which he performed life-saving Search & Rescue missions in the affected areas.
