June 2024

The 2024 Eastern Energy Expo Thrives at Mohegan Sun

With more than 3,100 attendees, 220 exhibitors and 10 trucks on display, the 2024 Eastern Energy Expo was an incredible success.

This year, the expo returned to the beautiful Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT, held May 19-22. The convention and trade show resulted in countless accolades and benefits for attendees, exhibitors and sponsors.

Three industry leaders - the Atlantic Region Energy Expo (AREE), the National Association of Oil & Energy Service Professionals (OESP) and the Pennsylvania Petroleum Association (PPA) - joined forces for another powerful annual conference.

The event again provided a forum that brought all segments of the petroleum marketing industry together to network and learn. Heating fuel marketers, motor fuel distributors and HVAC and oil service professionals reunited for the signature industry event.

The show featured more than 65 business programs across three tracks (Technical, Business, Motor Fuels/C-Store) and included more than 40 new exhibiting companies, offering products and services for the energy and home comfort industry.

New this year, OESP featured the return of the Student Skills Competition, called OESP Future Generations. Sixteen graduating students from Entech participated in a piping square competition on the trade show floor. Alex Brown and Matt Cloutier were the first place team winning $500 each in tools. Thank you to Angel Gonzalez, George Perrelli and George Pavlik for coordinating this exciting event and to Berk Little, the lead instructor at Entech for his cooperation in bringing the students together.

The convention also offered a variety of social and networking opportunities, including the OESP Reception/Hospitality Night, the Annual OESP Awards Banquet, the Care to Ride, “Ride for Ralph” benefitting Oil Heat Cares and the Annual Dave Nelsen Scholarship Golf Tournament. It was great to see so many familiar faces and to welcome new OESP members!

The OESP Technical Education track enjoyed its most successful year since the inception of the EEE. This year’s event was saw a huge crowd ready to learn, with many of the classrooms at standing-room-only capacity.

And the exhibit hall was packed to the last minute with plenty of traffic all day Tuesday into Wednesday. Happy exhibitors make for a successful show!

As education is a key component of this premier trade show, organizers will be looking to further enhance the business programs for 2025, attracting even more attendees seeking learning opportunities not easily found elsewhere.

Participating associations also include Connecticut Energy Marketers Association, Mid-Atlantic Petroleum Dealers Association, Empire State Energy Association and the New York State Energy Coalition.

The EEE would not be successful without the enormous sponsorship support it receives. Thank you to all of this year's sponsors, OESP members who assisted with the association's booth and to the 2024 sponsors:

OESP Celebrates its Annual Scholarship Winners

The winners of the 2024 Dave Nelsen Scholarships were announced at the EEE Conference.

This scholarship was established in 1999 as a meaningful way to remember and recognize the commitment to education made by OESP member Dave Nelsen. The scholarship is awarded to students who are currently attending or planning to attend a technical college or trade school with plans to pursue a career in the oil and energy industry.

“We are extremely proud of the 2024 Dave Nelsen Scholarship recipients,” OESP President Scott Vadino said. “These individuals are the best of the best applicants and we are confident that they will continue the legacy of Dave Nelsen.”

“We are very thankful to our corporate, association and OESP chapter sponsors, who, along with OESP, co-sponsor the scholarships each year,” Vadino added.

“Our company is proud to be able to offer educational assistance to young people entering our industry,” added Fred Hunt, Director of Sales & Marketing of R.W. Beckett, which supports the scholarships each year. “A career in the HVAC industry will offer a wealth of opportunities for these fine scholarship recipients.”

The 2024 Dave Nelsen Scholarship winners are all from Entech Advanced Energy Training School in Connecticut.

  • Aymen Benmohamed
  • Autumn Falco
  • Ben Hoffnung
  • Domenic Lascari
  • Brian Rankin

“The OESP scholarship committee reviewed submissions from an exceptional number of impressive candidates this year and thank all those who submitted applications,” said Angel Gonzalez, who coordinates the scholarship event each year.

OESP Honors Best in Class for 2024

The EEE serves as the perfect backdrop for OESP to host its annual awards, celebrating members who take the industry to the next level.

Six OESP members and one manufacturer were recognized.

Scott Vadino presented the Executive Board award to Bob Daros, recognizing him for his commitment to OESP in leading many important initiatives over the years including chairing the awards committee for many years and creating a fundraiser hosted at his home for Oil Heat Cares.

"OESP has the tremendous benefit of countless volunteers who are committed to advancing the association, as well as the industry," said Matt Spink of the Long Island Chapter, who chaired the OESP awards committee. "These individuals represent the best in our industry this year, and it is our privilege to bestow these national awards for their excellence and dedication."

The 2023 award winners are pictured below:

  • Lifetime Achievement Award: Jim Todd
  • Instructor of the Year: Jason Esteves
  • Manufacturer of the Year: Taco accepted by Dave Holdorf
  • Lou Ehrich Memorial Associate of the Year Award: John Dunleavy
  • Ralph Adams Memorial Service Manager of the Year: Lance Marques
  • Hugh W. McKee Memorial Award: Rick Glownia

The presenters all gave heartfelt and entertaining introductions as the recipients received their awards. It was a fabulous evening!

The Annual Dave Nelsen Scholarship Golf Outing was a Resounding Success!

The Annual Dave Nelsen Scholarship Golf Outing, led once again by George Fantacone, was an outstanding success. As in years’ past, the outing raised more than $20,000 for the scholarship fund which awards thousands of dollars in tuition money to deserving students each year. Since the fund's inception in 1999, more than $300,000 has been raised.

More than 100 golfers came together for a beautiful day of golf and fun. Congratulations to George and the entire association for an outstanding event!

OESP Raises $5,000 at the Annual Care to Ride Event!

OESP raised more than $5,000 for "Oil Heat Cares," during the annual "Care to Ride" event. The event, named Ride for Ralph, in memory of OESP’s National President, Ralph Adams, was held on Monday, May 20 during the annual Eastern Energy Expo at Mohegan Sun.

All proceeds raised by participants and sponsors were donated to Oil Heat Cares, the 501(c)(3) foundation, which receives donations throughout the year from seminars, donations and other events.

Congratulations to our highest fundraiser, Jim Froelich, who goes all-out each year to raise money for this very worthy cause.

"We are proud of our members and their families who, without the help of corporate sponsors, raised more than $5,000," OESP President Scott Vadino said. "We are grateful to those who spent some wonderful days at Mohegan with us, raising money for this very important cause."

Message from the Executive Director
by Lisa Strug

It was wonderful to see so many of you at the wildly successful Eastern Energy Expo that took place last month at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT. I truly enjoyed spending time with you and watching your continued dedication in running three days of education classes, a fantastic awards banquet and your participation in the fundraiser for the Dave Nelsen Scholarship.

I would like to thank the volunteers who worked the OESP membership booth with us – you were invaluable in our membership recruiting and spreading the word about the value of OESP.

OESP was definitely “in the house” at the EEE and we saw so many of you displaying our badge ribbons and wearing your OESP shirts with pride. We were thrilled with your participation.

The annual OESP Awards banquet recognized OESP members who have given countless hours of their time to the industry. Once again, kudos to our awards committee led by Matt Spink in pulling off a great evening. Congratulations to all the deserving winners.

The Dave Nelsen Scholarship awards were presented to five deserving students pursuing a career in the energy services industry. We would like to thank our generous sponsors for their support of this worthy cause: RW Beckett, Carlin Hydrolevel, the New Haven Chapter, the New York Area Chapters and Mid Atlantic Chapter.

By now, you have seen plenty from our great and generous advertisers. Taco, R.W. Beckett, Suntec Industries, Carlin/Hyrdolevel, General Filters, Sid Harvey, Roth, Weil-McLain, and Energy Kinetic. You will see their logos at the top of this issue and you’ll see OESP happily promote them at every turn.

While many of the local OESP chapters will be taking a well-deserved break for the summer months, it will be bustling at OESP headquarters in New Jersey.

We will be planning the fall Oil Heat Retreat. It will be held at the North Conway Grand Hotel in North Conway, NH, September 12-15. We expect a record turnout as we head north to this beautiful spot that is sure to not disappoint in the early fall.

On behalf of Jonathan Jaffe, Meredith Levy, Andrea Klimkowski and the rest of your OESP management team, it continues to be a pleasure to serve you. OESP is known for its mission of education and service. We are happy to be a part of that.

Have a terrific summer!
