International Mother Language Day - February 21

International Mother Language Day aims "to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world". This year, the theme for International Mother Language Day is “Multilingual Education - A Necessity to Transform Education”. Globally, 40% of the population does not have access to an education in a language they speak or understand. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is encouraging and promoting multilingual education based on mother tongue or first language to enable learners whose mother tongue is different from the language of instruction to bridge the gap between home and school, discover the school environment in a familiar language, and thus, learn better. This theme also places an emphasis on Indigenous people’s education and languages. Click here to learn more!

Spotlight: Black Hair Abroad: Carrying your Identity with You

Black Hair Abroad: Carrying your Identity with You

Date: Wednesday, February 22, 12:00 - 1:00 PM ET

Hair is a form of social expression and identity. For self-identifying black students or students who identify as a person of African descent, there are many aspects to consider in caring for hair abroad in both a practical sense and when considering self-expression, local cultural perceptions, and more.

As part of Black History Month, the Office of Global Activities and the Center for Global and Intercultural Studies (CGIS) will be welcoming Kaisha Brezina and Tamara West, CGIS Intercultural Programs Advisors, to discuss various hair resources and how local cultural perceptions of black hair have impacted experiences in international education abroad.

This event will be held online via Zoom. A Zoom link will be provided to all registrants prior to the event.
