Healthcare Workers' Mental Health in Disaster Settings: Lessons from Beirut and Ukraine with Dr. Maya Bizri

Date: Tuesday, May 23, 8:00 - 9:00 AM ET

Brief Description: This presentation is the first in the 2023 UMSN Coffee and Conversation Series. Dr. Maya Bizri is an Assistant Professor in Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine and a global mental health consultant. After starting her clinical career in Beirut in 2019, a time where the country was undergoing political, economic and COVID-19 challenges, and having started the first psycho-oncology program mid-pandemic and Beirut blast, her interests shifted to global mental health. Dr. Bizri is interested in addressing the mental health of healthcare workers in disaster, conflict and low-resource settings. This virtual presentation is free and open to all. Micro Social Work Practice with Afghan Evacuees

Date: Thursday, May 25, 1:00 - 2:00 PM ET

Brief Description: The webinar will provide an overview of the Afghan population who had to flee the country after the U.S. pulled out military and political support. Due to radical changes in the refugee resettlement programs in the past years, social support organizations were understaffed and unable to provide cultural orientation services to those arriving to the U.S. and connecting them to services. Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellows Seeking Support

The U-M Wallace House Center for Journalists is welcoming a cohort of 19 Journalism Fellows. The Fellows are accomplished journalists, typically 10 years or more into their careers, who represent nine countries and a broad cross-section of the U.S. You can read more about the incoming Fellows here. Most of the Fellows are looking for academic-year home/apartment rentals, and many are also looking to rent a car or bike for 10 months. If you or someone you know will be away during the coming academic year and have a home, apartment, car, or bike that you would be interested in renting to a Knight-Wallace Fellow, please reach out to Ashley Bates.

Volunteer to Lead an ELI Conversation Circle

Do you enjoy meeting new people from different cultures? Are you looking to develop your intercultural and professional skills? If yes, please consider volunteering to lead an ELI Conversation Circle! 

Conversation Circles provide international students and scholars at the University of Michigan with opportunities for informal English practice and insights into U.S. culture. o previous experience is necessary, you just need to:

  • Be a current U-M student, faculty, or staff member
  • Possess a high level of English fluency and deep knowledge of U.S. culture
  • Commit one hour a week for 8 weeks in the summer term
  • Attend a one-hour training orientation (if you are a new facilitator)

U-M Library Data Visualization Fellowship

Brief Description: The Data Visualization Fellowship is a summer-long, paid opportunity open to undergraduate and graduate students working on a research project that would benefit from a visualization component. During the fellowship, you’ll partner with library mentors to help guide work on your individual project. Through regular meetings, you’ll work among a cohort to share knowledge and expertise, and access resources across campus. The fellowship will give preference to applicants who are first-generation college students, low-income students, and/or students currently in financially precarious situations. Peace Corps Prep Graduate Student Peer Advisor

Brief Description: the International Center will be hiring a graduate student to fill the position of Student Services Assistant II (Peace Corps Prep Certificate Program Graduate Student Advisor, Job Reference #7979), which will start at the beginning of the Fall 2023 term. The person who assumes this position will work together with the GEEA Assistant Director to carry out the Peace Corps Prep certificate program at U-M. Peace Corps Prep is a preparatory certificate program for undergraduates who are interested in applying for the Peace Corps in the future. The position involves advising undergraduate students, program management, and event planning! Preference will be given to applicants graduating no earlier than May 2024. Global Scholars Program Student Engagement Coordinator

Brief Description: The Global Scholars Program (GSP) is a living-learning community with approximately 130 students who collectively hold more than 30 citizenships, speak a combined 30 languages, and share a passion for global scholarship and service. Student Engagement Coordinators assist with program administration and supervision of our student leaders. Specifically, Student Engagement Coordinators co-lead weekly meetings; conduct one-on-ones with students; advise students on coordinating multicultural events; advise students on facilitating cross-cultural dialogues; serve as mentors; provide intercultural communication and leadership skill development opportunities; and serve as a central point person for all events organized by students. U-M Epidemiology Research Assistant

Brief Description: The University of Michigan Department of Epidemiology is seeking a Research Assistant to support a qualitative research project examining the health consequences of climate change, disasters, and colonialism in Puerto Rico. The overarching goal of this study is to describe the experiences of Puerto Ricans who have been exposed to multiple disasters, their physical and mental health trajectories during these periods, barriers and protective factors to disaster adjustment, and the contrast between different disaster experiences. The study will involve conducting in-depth interviews with current residents of Puerto Rico who lived in the U.S. territory between 2017 and 2022. The research assistant will support qualitative data collection and analysis activities including but not limited to the following: scheduling interviews, accompanying the principal investigator during interviews and taking notes, transcribing interviews, supporting interview coding, and other research-related activities. Click here to learn more and apply.
