International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People

November 29 marks the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which has been marked annually since 1978. The International Day of Solidarity provides an opportunity for the international community to refocus its attention on the fact that the question of Palestine remains unresolved and that the Palestinian people are yet to attain their inalienable rights as defined by the UN General Assembly, namely, the right to self-determination, the right to national independence and sovereignty and the right of return of the refugees. 2023 Graduate Student Capstone Presentations: Shikhandi

Date: Tuesday, November 28, 6:00 - 9:30 PM

Brief Description: Shikhandi is a performance piece by Sreyashi Dey (our MSW student), an exploration of gender and identity issues surrounding Shikhandi, one of the most overlooked characters of the Indian epic Mahabharata.

Global Crossroads Lecture Series: Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Training Program Scholar

Date: Thursday, November 30, 12:00 - 1:00 PM

Location: Virtual/Zoom

Brief Description: Lindsey English, MPH candidate, traveled to Kenya in Summer 2023 where she worked with the data science and nutrition and food systems teams at the African Population and Health Research Center. Her projects centered around mortality and morbidity rates in East Africa and an analysis of supermarket purchases on chronic disease rates. Using advanced machine learning techniques and innovative measures to assess morbidity and mortality rates, the data science unit examined supermarket purchasing patterns on health, cause of death variation, and healthcare utilization in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. In addition to sharing her research work, she will share her experiences with the MHRT program and global health research as a student. Click here to RSVP.

Festival of Asian Music

Brief Description: Composed of over twenty cross-campus performances, lectures, and associated events, this immersive festival features musical traditions from across Asia. 60 Minutes Around the Globe: Trinidad & Tobago

Brief Description: 60 Minutes Around the Globe is a program series hosted by the International House Ann Arbor (IHAA) and the International Center where members of the international community share a brief presentation about the culture and history of their home country. Third Annual Latinx Research Week

Puentes is a graduate student organization that aims to center the experiences and needs of Latinx graduate students across schools and disciplines at the University of Michigan. In pursuit of this goal, Puentes annually hosts Latinx Research Week (LRW). LRW is a conference that celebrates the scholarship of Latinx students, researchers, and faculty at U-M, and uplifts research relevant to Latinx communities. LRW provides a unique, interdisciplinary space where scholars across campus can share their research and build new connections. From March 11 to March 14, 2024, researchers will showcase their work through oral presentation sessions, a poster session, as well as attend other sponsored events. 

If you are interested in presenting your research, please fill out this form by Friday, January 26, at 5:00 PM. Submissions must include a title and 250-word abstract or description of your work. All student presenters will be awarded a certificate and entered to win raffle prizes in recognition of their contributions to their field.

Study Abroad in Northern Ireland with CIEL

The Center for International Experiential Learning (CIEL) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to inspiring creative and critical thinking by utilizing the unique power of experiential learning and international travel in conflict-affected regions.

CIEL's Summer 2024 program in Northern Ireland will run from June 16 - 28. Students will actively engage with politicians, community leaders, non-governmental organizations, faith leaders, academic experts, and victims/survivors from all sides impacted by the conflict to hear a comprehensive view of the divergent perspectives, narratives, and human stories of people living in the region.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and given priority in the order they are received, but the early bird application deadline is November 30. Click here here for more information and to apply.

Student Organization Global Health Equity Challenge

Center for Global Health Equity is looking for U-M student organizations that want to implement a global health equity related project that improves the health and well-being of people living in a low- or middle-income country. This program offers training for a pitch competition where teams representing student organizations will compete for funding for their project (top four finalists will receive funding, highest award is $5,000). At least one of the organization’s members must register for the mandatory prep workshop on December 1, 2023, from 1-5pm. The student organizations do not have to have a project already defined to participate in the workshop, but the organization must have undergraduate students involved (or be willing to bring them into the mix), and they need to be able to show evidence of a collaborative relationship with a partner in the country in which they plan to work. OAMI Dreamer Scholarship: Deadline Extended

Dreamer Scholarship aims to break down barriers and financially assist undocumented students at the University of Michigan. This scholarship not only covers tuition fees but also covers other expenses that may inhibit degree completion. Every student deserves a chance to excel, regardless of their immigration status. 

Application deadline is November 10, 2023. Students can expect to hear back by mid-December regarding their scholarship application. Click here for more information and apply.
