Spotlight: Global Independent Study Information Session

The Office of Global Activities is proud to announce an information session on Global Independent Study (GIS) for Spring/Summer 2024.



Through a Global Independent Study, incoming MSW students can receive grant funding to design and implement a social work project involving international travel. Students from all pathways and curriculum tracks are eligible to apply and will receive 1-3 elective credits upon successful completion of their project. Grant recipients will receive up to $2,500 to help offset the cost of their GIS experience. 


This info session will provide an overview of the grant, explain the application process, and review travel considerations. We will also have a panel of returned Global Independent Study students share their GIS experiences from this summer, followed by Q&A. Click here to RSVP!

Environmental Justice and Well-being: Improving Energy Access to Empower Women in Rural India

Date: Thursday, October 19, 11:30 AM

Brief Description: This webinar will discuss a recently published study demonstrating the impact of providing skills-based training through a solar lamp initiative on women's empowerment. Longitudinal data from 313 women associated with the solar initiative in the states of Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh, were collected to predict three indicators of women's empowerment — assertiveness, decision-making, and satisfaction. The study found that women's perceptions of assertiveness, satisfaction, and decision-making ability significantly changed. Click here for more information and to register.

Breaking Barriers: Empowering The Hispanic and Latinx Community

More Than “First Do No Harm”: Modeling Global Engagement through the U-M/Ghana Partnership

Date: Thursday, October 19, 7:00 PM

Location: Detroit Observatory in Ann Arbor

Brief Description: In 1986, Tim Johnson, then chair of obstetrics and gynecology in the U-M Medical School, traveled to Ghana as part of an initial group of Americans to reestablish relationships in medicine. The experience transformed him, so he launched a partnership between U-M and Ghanaian institutions for training health workers, that continues to this day. This session with Dr. Johnson is in connection with his new book on the partnership, More Than “First Do No Harm,” which demonstrates that the partnership serves as vital model for global health collaborations. Community Conversation: Processing the Violence in the Middle East

Brief Description: The violence in the Middle East has left many of us with sorrow, fear, and other profound feelings. Community Conversations provide a space for our school community to come together to discuss painful and complex topics taking place in our world - and sometimes, to just gather together in grief. In this light, this community conversation is about the recent attacks and the complicated devastation that continues in the region. Translate-a-thon 2023

Date: Friday, October 20, 5:00 PM - 10:00 PM & Saturday, October 21, 9:00 AM - 10:00 PM

Brief Description: The Translate-a-thon is a short, intense, community-driven translation marathon, where volunteers interested in translation come together to translate materials for the benefit of our local, national and international community. They accept projects from a variety of disciplines in a variety of different formats. They welcome all languages to the event. Translate-a-thon also promotes a sense of community among translators. Info Session on Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship

Date: Tuesday, October 24, 4:00 - 5:00 PM

Location: Virtual

Brief Description: The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship provides tuition and stipend to students studying designated foreign languages in combination with area studies or international aspects of professional studies. Israel and Palestinian Territories Evacuation Insurance Update

U-M faculty travelers who were in Israel have been successfully evacuated using our GeoBlue travel abroad health insurance. The evacuation was facilitated by Crisis24, our assistance provider contracted through GeoBlue. Because University of Michigan used its evacuation coverage in Israel, U-M travelers will not have access to GeoBlue / Crisis24 evacuation services in Israel for the next 60 days. If you plan to travel to Israel or the Palestinian Territories in the next 60 days, please notify the travel safety team at umich-itoc@umich.edu so that they can reach out to you and plan next steps.

Passport Day

The Global Engagement U.S. Passport Grant Program is a new initiative of the Office of the Provost designed to provide financial and administrative support for the purpose of obtaining a U.S. Passport. A valid passport opens the doors for students to pursue valuable international experiences, including study abroad, internships, research, volunteer opportunities, competitions, and conferences. Applicants awarded the Global Engagement U.S. Passport Grant must be available to attend the Passport Day Workshop for one hour on Monday, December 4, 2023 (multiple time slots will be available throughout the day). Passport Day is a one-day event where the Washtenaw County Clerk's Office will be on campus to accept passport applications. The application deadline is Monday, October 30, 2023.

Boren Awards: Language, Culture, Service

The Boren Fellowships for International Study provide funding for research and language study in areas critical to U.S. interests. U-M Boren Fellowship campus application deadline is January 15, 2024 at 11:59 PM EST, and the national application deadline is January 24, 2024 at 5:00 PM EST. Masters in International and Regional Studies Program

The U-M International Institute is currently accepting applications for the Masters in International and Regional Studies (MIRS) program. MIRS combines an interdisciplinary curriculum, deep regional/thematic expertise, rigorous methodological training, and international experiences to enable students to situate global issues and challenges in their cultural, historical, geographical, political, and socioeconomic contexts and to approach them in diverse ways.
