2020 Annual Report

It’s the network!!

The One Health Commission (OHC) has been busy during the COVID-19 pandemic with

One Health Education and Outreach activities,

providing Global One Health Community

Resources / Services and with One Health Advocacy efforts.

Education and Outreach

To aid public understanding of One Health relative to the pandemic, the OHC has been compiling select popular media OpEds and Commentaries about the COVID-19 pandemic that mention and/or call for One Health. These articles are what the ‘public’ reads and this webpage can provide quite an education for law and policy makers.
Since the onset of the pandemic, the Commission's Global One Health Community Listserv has increased by over 2,000 to now over 12,400 individuals. The OHC also continues to provide listserv services for the International Student One Health Alliance (ISOHA).
In April 2020 the OHC partnered with the WHO Global Outreach and Response Network (GOARN) in its COVID-19 Call to Action seeking experts in the global One Health community who were willing and able to assist during the pandemic. In July the OHC, OHEJP, and WHO GOARN led a Global Survey of One Health Networks and Workforce Response to COVID-19 that saw over 1,000 participants. Results will be published soon.
In 2020 Executive Director Stroud gave 20 One Health presentations, 3 podcast and 1 documentary interviews. Since 2014 she has given over 90 One Health talks / lectures and interviews.
Since 2015 the OHC has led or provided webinar support for over 100 educational events, including 16 led by ISOHA, 41 led by the Washington DC One Health Academy, 3 hosted by the Rabies in the Americas (RITA) Conference, and 16 led by the Commission’s One Health-Social Sciences Initiative (OHSS) initiative.

Since it started in 2017, the OHSS has also led 16 open online meetings/discussion and has developed a strong global following.
The One Health Education-US (OHE-US, see new webpage) team continues to compile K-12 One Health Educational Resources and has launched a One Health survey for primary/secondary teachers that is currently in the field. (See an open access preview. Please feel free to share the actual Survey with K-12 teachers only). It is hoped that such OHE teams will form in other countries to work with the OHC.
The International One Health for One Planet Education (1HOPE) Initiative, co-created in 2019 by the OHC and One Health Initiative pro bono team (OHI), has gained momentum even during the pandemic with working groups forming (so far) in the Americas and in Africa.
In 2020 the Commission’s Bat Rabies Education Team (BRET) partnered with the USDA Wildlife Research Center on a Bat Rabies infographic student competition. Find and use those free downloadable infographics and other free posters on the BRET webpage to help educate about rabies in bats.
Having spearheaded in 2016 creation of the annual global One Health Day, the OHC continues to lead it with the One Health Platform and One Health Initiative. See Events maps for 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020, even in the pandemic. The OHC also provides half of the cash awards for the One Health Day Student Event Competition.

Global One Health Community Resources and Services

The Commission’s open access, monthly ‘One Health Happenings News Notes’ continues to share One Health news with the world.
Additionally, the OHC website shares One Health in the News and Narratives of One Health in Action.
In January, 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic broke and in support of Resolutions passed in both the US Senate and House declaring January 2020 to be One Health Awareness Month in the US, the OHC and partner organization Louisiana One Health in Action led a One Health Awareness Month Social Media Campaign. It included a calendar available all year round for supporters to highlight the many faces of One Health. This effort was celebrated around the world in 2020 and will be repeated each year.
The Online One Health (higher education) Opportunities Bulletin Boards launched by the OHC in 2018 are being used extensively and now ISOHA is partnering with the OHC to coordinate postings.
The OHC Who’s Who in One Health and the ISOHA Who’s Who in Students for One Health (SOH) Web Pages continue to expand.
The online One Health Library, free to the world, continues to expand.

Nurturing the Next Generation of

One Health leaders

One of the Commission’s most exciting and fulfilling endeavors since 2015 has been supporting creation of an independent International Student One Health Alliance (ISOHA), working with them to Connect Student One Health Groups around the world, providing a Student One Health Listserv and webinar support (16 so far) for their educational efforts.

One Health Advocacy – Think Globally, Act Locally

Though the Commission works globally and, as a 501c3 non-profit licensed in the US, can only do limited ‘lobbying’, it is working to educate US law and policy makers and staff about the urgency of embracing and imple-menting One Health. In the U.S., since July 2019 it has provided an overview webpage on the Advancing Emergency Preparedness Through One Health Act of 2019. At the bottom of that page one can review advocacy efforts (such as educational Congressional ‘Briefings’ for both House and Senate) and access information on how organizations can become part of an informal coalition of US One Health partners being led by the OHC. US citizens can also access an Action Alert webpage provided by the AVMA, an OHC founder and sponsor. Leading One Health organizations in other countries are encouraged to take similar local actions to make One Health the default way of doing business at all levels of research, academia, clinical practice, government and policy.

No other organization deliberately recruits professionals across so many sectors

to join hands in so many joint global community One Health actions and endeavors .
