What's New at OHE?

C elebrating healthy, connected communities here and abroad: An interview with OHE's Rexford Anson Dwamena

Rexford Anson-Dwamena is a Senior Social Epidemiologist in OHE. He (along with his colleagues across the agency) demonstrates on a daily basis what it means to be a part of a healthy and connected community here at VDH.  However, few of his colleagues know that Rex started a school in Ghana several years ago and his school is contributing to a healthier, more connected community in Ghana.  OHE staff recently contributed to the school by donating over 200 books to Dr. Ken Studer's Children Library (named posthumously after a former OHE staff member).

Q:  Can you tell us a little bit about the school you started in Ghana?
Rex: " West Point Prep School is located in a town called Agona-Swedru in central region of Ghana. About 8 0% of parents in this area are low income and cannot afford to buy the necessary school materials for their children. This need is highlighted by the fact that an estimated 80 percent of the students in the area live in low income household s ."

Q: What motivated you to start a school?
Rex: " The hope was that the anticipated success of this school will build and sustain a "bandwagon of achievements" which will change the community forever and again help break the cycle of poverty (we hope). "

Q:  What is your goal for the school?
Rex: " The goal is for the students to develop a passion for learning, capacity for independent thinking, moral values, self-confidence without arrogance, Christian worldview, and a broad range of interests that extend beyond the confines of the classroom and again to encourage all students to become accountable individuals who can work together, politely and show respect for their peers as well as the citizens of the community.
