What's New at OHE

The Office of Health Equity also serves as the Virginia State Office of Rural Health and has recently received the 2016 State Offices of Rural Health Award of Excellence!

A few excerpts from the nomination include:

"This SORH has been implementing its State Rural Health Plan over the past few years, a plan developed and being implemented in partnership with over 50 local organizations.  Their initiatives in telehealth, population health, community engagement, quality improvement, oral health equity, and mobile integrated healthcare have earned recognition by several entities, including the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy and the State Commissioner of Health.  For example, they been involved in innovative substance abuse intervention work by holding substance abuse and Naloxone trainings for medical students, lay responders, and community members.  They also held a tribal outreach session that was promising, convening governmental leaders and department heads to have a listening session with tribal members.  "

"However, more importantly, their efforts have resulted in increased access to health services for rural veterans and citizens via telehealth, engagement of rural hospitals and communities in population health activities, technical assistance and support of a growing movement in mobile integrated healthcare, and support of increased advocacy for rural communities related to oral health, the opiate epidemic, and other priorities outlined in their State Rural Health Plan."

Congratulations to the entire team involved and keep up the good work!
