President's Message
Gary B. Roberts

The year 2020 is one we will never forget. The Coronavirus has impacted all of us in many ways. Many people have lost their jobs and small businesses are reeling. Because of the advent of three different vaccines, there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel. President Biden’s stimulus package will help but not for long if this pandemic continues unabated. I work in the health care industry and our nursing staff has been busy conducting vaccine clinics. I applaud our frontline health care workers who risk their health every day to take care of us. The vaccine effort is moving faster than any of us imagined but we still have a long road ahead.

The NHPA, as many of you know, has extended the deadline for World Tournament entries to June 8, 2021. We are all hoping that the World Tournament will be held as scheduled in Winnemucca, Nevada. I am optimistic that increased levels of Covid vaccines will make it safe to hold the event. It was disappointing to hear that the 2022 World Tournament will now be in Monroe, Louisiana rather than Lansing, Michigan. It is hoped Lansing will host the 2023 World Tournament. This change occurred because the City of Lansing sold the arena where the tournament was to be held.

By the time you read this message, you will be aware that I have become a candidate for the President of the NHPA. To say this would be a challenging job is an understatement. In order to have time for this job, I will be retiring this year. Our membership continues to decline year after year and we have been unable to secure sponsorship for our major tournaments. It will take hard work and innovation to save our sport. I refuse to give up on our sport without making every effort to develop appropriate changes. Whether I am elected or not, my retirement will allow me to have the time to contribute to promoting horseshoe pitching in Ohio and nationally.

In Ohio, we have a full slate of tournaments scheduled for the remainder of the year. Most of our older pitchers have been able to receive the Covid vaccine, and the number of new infections in Ohio is much lower. I look forward to pitching in our upcoming tournaments.

I am optimistic that this pandemic will end soon as the number of people receiving the vaccine increases. This should allow us to get back to some level of normalcy. I pray that you and your families will get through this safely.

We have a group rate at the hotel in Winnemucca. The tournament will be July 19-31, 2021. The Quality Inn Winnemucca - Model T Casino, 1130 W Winnemucca Blvd, Winnemucca, NV 89445, Phone 775-623 -2588 has agreed to a $90-$95/night rate based on single queen/double room. If interested in securing this rate just give them a call to reserve. There are also other hotels available such as the Candlewood Suites and Winnemucca Inn plus several more. The closest airport is Reno which is about 2 hrs away. The Amtrak train would be another option. If you have any travel questions, please call me at 937-239-6877.
