Welcome to the first edition of our OISE Wellness Newsletter! This newsletter is intended to connect students, faculty and staff to opportunities to practice and learn about the various wellness activities available at OISE and the University of Toronto.

Learn how Nicole Chen, recipient of a 2018 Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence, uses mindfulness to help her students build compassion, gratitude and resilience. In 2017, Nicole co-wrote a mindfulness and social/emotional learning course, which six Toronto Catholic District School Board schools are offering this year. Her dream is to have the course become part of the Ontario curriculum.

Hilary Inwood:  Mapping Sustainable Happiness

Our happiness is integrally related to that of all life forms on earth - what is truly best for people is good for the planet, too. Join Hilary and learn more about Sustainable Happiness and begin to map and connect its elements to your own life. Hilary teaches in the Master of Teaching program at OISE, and has led its Environmental & Sustainability Education (ESE) Initiative for the past decade. Her work as a teacher educator, researcher, and artist often extends beyond the classroom to include school gardens, outdoor education centres, parks, and galleries.
OISE's ACADEMIC SOCIAL CLUB
(AcSoC)
OISE's Academic Social Club (AcSoC) is a peer-led group that group organizes curated activities and social events, hosts student-focused discussions, and leads excursions throughout Toronto. Members share information about activities, events, and services that are relevant to graduate students at OISE. Events are low-or-no-cost and membership is free.

The Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE) Initiative provides OISE students, TDSB educators and many others with an introduction to the concepts and practices of ESE to integrate in your teaching and learning at OISE, our partner schools and beyond!

OISE's Amazing Stair Race
October 7-12, 2019, 12:00 - 1:00 pm each day
Form a team and join the  Amazing Stair Race . The race is open to all students, faculty, and staff at OISE. Teams walk quickly up 13 flights of stairs (starting at the concourse level and ending at the 12th floor,) stopping along the way to answer sustainability-related questions. The winners get their names on the  Golden Sneaker Trophy  and some great prizes!   To sign up, please email the names of your team members and your preferred day to  [email protected] .

Mindfulness at Work: Living and Working with Presence

This keynote presentation offers a research-based and experiential approach to mindfulness in the workplace. Participants will learn about mindfulness concepts, the science behind the practice, and have an opportunity to participate in short guided meditations and reflections. They will also be introduced to the concept of self-compassion and learn practical ways to apply self-compassion to their own life and work. This content offers a contemporary, secular conceptualization of mindfulness that is based on (but also departs from) contemplative traditions.

A Co-Curricular Credit Opportunity for Students: Cultivating Personal Health & Wellness through Mindfulness
The Cultivating Personal Health & Wellness through Mindfulness program is an opportunity for students to become aware of, develop knowledge about, and practice mindfulness for their overall health and well being. The program is intended to improve one's general well-being to impact both their academic and personal lives. Successful students will have attended 10 or more of the available OISE Wellness sessions throughout the year. Sessions can include Mindful Moments, Lunch & Learn sessions, yoga or other pre-approved activities for this program. This opportunity is available to all OISE students.

Since the start of the program in September, over 100 students are currently registered in the program and it's growing every day!
Training Opportunities
The University of Toronto is committed to supporting a culture that promotes mental health. The "Identify, Assist, Refer" approach guides you in identifying someone experiencing a mental health challenge, offering assistance, and facilitating help-seeking behaviour.

The IAR Online a great training for students, faculty and staff, and only takes about 30 minute to complete!

As a priority outlined in the OISE Academic Plan 2017-2022 , we established the OISE Wellness committee in 2018 to develop a wellness program that supports the health and well-being of the OISE community.
