Congress has passed an extension to fund the National Flood Insurance Program through November 17th; and our fight to protect the program continues. We encourage all OKCMAR members to not only learn more about the NFIP and how its lapse affects homeownership, but also submit a message to Congress in support of the program. It will take less than a minute to sign and submit the pre-written message, but you also have a chance to add your own personal messaging.

According to the Census Bureau, 56.3% of First Americans are homeowners as of 2022.

The state of Oklahoma has the highest percentage of First American homeowners at 68%, followed by New Mexico at 61%, Arizona at 58% and South Dakota at 54%. Our beautiful state is ideal for a group of real estate professionals to support the First Americans community more than ever. With the federal funding available, there could be higher rates of homeownership with a little time spent in services for this community.

Sociological factors that contribute to lower homeownership rates include systemic inequalities, historical dislocation and limited access to affordable financial products. In many cases, land trust issues on reservations also complicate the mortgage process.

I am one of a few First American REALTORS® who would like to improve the statistics for the community. We invite you to join a grassroots nonprofit to support education on homeownership, collaborating with financial institutions to create affordable loan products and advocating to eliminate systemic barriers to homeownership in this community.

Happy First Americans Day!
