I often hear my fellow REALTORS® say that NAR does not do anything for their members, when in fact they do!

NAR provides housing opportunity grants to the local associations, which helps innovate ideas that can expand home ownership opportunities locally. We have seen this across the country in many success stories and with the webinar, we plan on bringing these stories to our members so they can learn and network on how they too can implement changes needed in their local communities.

Serving on the Housing Opportunities Committee, I learned about how an association used a grant to work with the city on accessory dwelling units and how cities/associations that were facing housing shortages were using them to help fill the need.

Five years later, OKCMAR Government Affairs is working with the City of Oklahoma City on allowing accessory dwelling units (ADU). We have utilized a land use grant from NAR to help propose verbiage in the upcoming ADU ordinance and also held meetings with the City of Tulsa to discuss how they implemented ADUs. Having the ability to bring REALTORS® together from across the country to learn what other associations are achieving is a unique tool we have at our disposal.

Last week members of OKCMAR's Advocacy group met with David Schwartz, the City's affordable housing consultant, and discussed strategies to be pursued. Principal Planner Kim Cooper-Hart and Councilwoman JoBeth Hamon also added valuable insight to the conversation.
