The Holy Spirit: We celebrated Pentecost last Sunday. What do we know about the Holy Spirit:

• The Holy Spirit has Always Existed

God himself is an eternal exchange of love, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and he has destined us to share in that exchange. (CCC 221)



Before his Passover, Jesus announced the sending of "another Paraclete" (Advocate), the Holy Spirit. At work since creation, having previously "spoken through the prophets," the Spirit will now be with and in the disciples, to teach them and guide them "into all the truth." The Holy Spirit is thus revealed as another divine person with Jesus and the Father.    (CCC 243 )

• The Holy Spirit is God

The Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, is God, one and equal with the Father and the Son, of the same substance and also of the same nature. . . Yet he is not called the Spirit of the Father alone,. . . but the Spirit of both the Father and the Son. (CCC 245)

• The Holy Spirit is not a dove

While most often depicted as a dove, the Holy Spirit is not an actual dove, but God himself, who on occasion may take the form of a dove.

At the end of the flood, whose symbolism refers to Baptism, a dove released by Noah returns with a fresh olive-tree branch in its beak as a sign that the earth was again habitable. When Christ comes up from the water of his baptism, the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, comes down upon him and remains with him. The Spirit comes down and remains in the purified hearts of the baptized ... Christian iconography traditionally uses a dove to suggest the Spirit. (CCC 701)

• The Holy Spirit was fully revealed at Pentecost

On the day of Pentecost when the seven weeks of Easter had come to an end, Christ's Passover is fulfilled in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, manifested, given, and communicated as a divine person: of his fullness, Christ, the Lord, pours out the Spirit in abundance. On that day, the Holy Trinity is fully revealed.  (CCC 731)



• Christians receive the Holy Spirit at Baptism

From the very day of Pentecost, the Church has celebrated and administered holy Baptism. Indeed St. Peter declares to the crowd astounded by his preaching: "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (CCC 1226)

El Espíritu Santo: Celebramos Pentecostés el domingo pasado. ¿Qué sabemos sobre el Espíritu Santo?

• El Espíritu Santo ha existido siempre.

Dios mismo es un intercambio eterno de amor, Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo, y nos ha destinado a participar en ese intercambio. (CCC 221)

Antes de su Pasión, Jesús anunció el envío de "otro Paráclito" (Abogado), el Espíritu Santo. Ha estado en acción desde la creación, habiendo "hablado anteriormente a través de los profetas", el Espíritu estará ahora con y en los discípulos, para enseñarles y guiarlos "a toda la verdad". El Espíritu Santo se revela, así como otra persona divina junto a Jesús y el Padre. (CCC 243)

• El Espíritu Santo es Dios

El Espíritu Santo, la tercera persona de la Trinidad, es Dios, uno e igual con el Padre y el Hijo, de la misma sustancia y también de la misma naturaleza... Sin embargo, no se le llama solo el Espíritu del Padre..., sino el Espíritu tanto del Padre como del Hijo. (CCC 245)

• El Espíritu Santo no es una paloma

Aunque a menudo se representa como una paloma, el Espíritu Santo no es una paloma real, sino Dios mismo, quien en ocasiones puede tomar la forma de una paloma.

Al final del diluvio, cuyo simbolismo se refiere al Bautismo, una paloma liberada por Noé vuelve con una rama de olivo fresco en su pico como signo de que la tierra era nuevamente habitable. Cuando Cristo sale del agua de su bautismo, el Espíritu Santo, en forma de paloma, desciende sobre él y permanece con él. El Espíritu desciende y permanece en los corazones purificados de los bautizados ... La iconografía cristiana utiliza tradicionalmente una paloma para sugerir el Espíritu. (CCC 701)

• El Espíritu Santo fue plenamente revelado en Pentecostés

En el día de Pentecostés, cuando las siete semanas de Pascua habían terminado, la Pascua de Cristo se cumple en la efusión del Espíritu Santo, manifestado, dado y comunicado como persona divina: de su plenitud, Cristo, el Señor, derrama el Espíritu en abundancia. En ese día, la Santa Trinidad se revela plenamente. (CCC 731)

• Los cristianos reciben el Espíritu Santo en el Bautismo

Desde el mismo día de Pentecostés, la Iglesia ha celebrado y administrado el santo Bautismo. De hecho, San Pedro declara a la multitud asombrada por su predicación: "Arrepiéntanse y sean bautizados cada uno de ustedes en el nombre de Jesucristo para el perdón de sus pecados; y recibirán el don del Espíritu Santo." (CCC 1226)
