Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!
Thanksgiving has long been my favorite holiday. Yes, even over Christmas. The reason that I have always enjoyed it most is simply because it is about being together, it is about sharing in gratitude, and a meal. It’s about family traditions, new and old. And for my family anyway, generally it is filled with laughter. It isn’t about presents, the sales or decorations (though I do love them), but simply about being present and in the moment, whatever those moments may entail.
This week, as I have reflected on things that I am grateful for, I find myself thankful for each of you, the students, the teachers, the parents and the extended community. The community that OLG is, is because of all of us, and for this, I am tremendously thankful. I am thankful for our student leaders in all grades who step up and model what it means to live out our School-wide Learning Expectations (SLEs) each day, most recently with our Bulldogs of the Month, recognized on World Kindness Day. I am thankful for our students who show compassion to their peers and work hard in school. For the families and staff who step up and volunteer, support others, you name it. We have much to be thankful for.
As we move into Thanksgiving, we prepare for the season that is all about preparedness. Advent. Advent begins on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and is a time when we begin to prepare our minds and spirits for Jesus’ coming at Christmas. It is a season of waiting, anticipation and longing, during the darkest time in the year, that great light is nearing. The light of our faith. The light of Christ born at Christmas.
Each week we will focus on the different themes of Advent in the school and in the newsletter. I encourage you to read them closely, and share them with your students and families. This is a good time to challenge your family to grow in faith, find ways to give back, be involved, come to Mass, you name it. As families in a Catholic school, this is a beautiful time to embrace the traditions of the Catholic faith, and share in the things that set us apart and make us who we are.
In the coming days, I invite you to talk as a family about the ways you will celebrate Advent as a family this year, focusing on gratitude as we move into this new liturgical season.
On Monday next week, be on the lookout for a letter about Tuition Assistance. Remember that the deadline this year is firm. December 31st, for any tuition assistance through Fulcrum or the school. As we look at the needs of our school, we will not be able to offer to the extent that we have in previous years, so completing the tuition assistance on time, and fully is paramount. More to come on Monday when it is not lost in your inbox with the holidays.
Below, please also read closely about the Partners in the Gospel update. There is much to be shared, and more to come in the months ahead, but reading the links below are important.
Peace be with all of you this Thanksgiving.
