Principal's Letter

Dear OLG Families,

Happy Thursday to each of you! What a week it has been. Though I have been out of the building, attempting to rest (though I do not personally sit still well), I have been kept in the loop daily about the ongoings in the building. Thank you, Ms. Janet, and the office team for all that you have done this week, and for the many of you who checked in on me as the week progressed. I look forward to being back in the building next week.

K-5 families, last week it was a pleasure to meet with you all to talk about the upcoming year, and to provide your children’s teachers opportunities to share their curriculum with you. I enjoyed walking into the classrooms and seeing all of the hard work that your children’s teachers put into their presentations for you.

PreK families, I wish that I could be there tonight to hear about the exciting things that are happening, but I am confident that the ELC team will do a wonderful job sharing about the many gifts of our community and the great learning that happens in early childhood education. We are fortunate to have such great teachers.

Middle school families, thank you for accommodating the pivot to September 28th for your curriculum night. PreK families, you are most welcome to join for the first 30 minutes if you would like to hear the message I shared with K-5 families last week and with the middle school families two weeks from tonight.

One of the biggest discussions at Curriculum Night last week was acknowledgment that the new Family Handbook would be coming your way. Since this is something that we feel is important to discuss with families before it is shared out, the new send out date will be after Middle School Curriculum Night on September 28th. The current handbook that is on the website still stands until the new updated policy replaces it, continuing our norm of behavioral policies, dress code, tuition, absences, etc. Look for the new Handbook coming your way on September 28th.

A few final announcements:

Earthquake Kits need to be turned in to homeroom teachers. This is important. Please make sure you do this ASAP if you have not already done so.

MAP Testing begins next week for 1st- 8th grade students. MAP is our standardized test. The best way you can help your children to be ready to to make sure that they get enough rest, have a good breakfast, pack a healthy snack and lunch. Being on time, and present is key as well. Encouraging a learning mindset, and positivity towards the test at home, also helps your child to feel comfortable and confident to do their very best on the test. Remind them that the test is untimed and to do their best. Not knowing every answer is okay. In fact, this test actually has thousands of test question combinations, and at times will even provide your child with more challenging questions, simply to see how they respond, problem solve and comprehend. Being challenged is a good thing. Your homeroom teacher will communicate test schedules with you.

Finally, as a reminder, tomorrow there is no school. It is a professional development day for teachers. There is EDC if needed for K-8. Please sign up on the website if you plan to attend. We will be focusing on SEL (social emotional learning), emergency procedures and collaborative work among the teachers and staff. We look forward to seeing you back on Monday.

Have a wonderful, and healthy weekend.

With Gratitude,

Ms. Lauren Hobbs
