For this penitential season, the Church draws on the wisdom of the Scriptures and tradition in suggesting a time of intense prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

  • Abstinence: On days of abstinence eating of meat is not allowed. Catholics in the United States are obliged to abstain on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays during the season of Lent. Catholics are also obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good FridaySelf-imposed observance of fasting on all weekdays of Lent is strongly recommended, as is abstinence from meat on all Fridays of the year.

  • Fasting: On a day of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal the other full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are permitted. The obligation of fasting binds Catholics who are 18 - 59 years old. The obligation of abstinence applies to those 14 years and older. The law does not apply when health or ability to work would be seriously affected.

PARTNERS IN THE GOSPEL UPDATE

Trainings continue for Pastors, priests, staff and key leaders. This past week the Archdiocese hosted a webinar on "Consultative & Discernment-Based DecisionMaking (Part One)”.

This webinar will present practical knowledge aimed at equipping leadership in navigating the process of making decisions and the underlying discernment needed ensure a consultative process that involves everyone, including our Parish Family Advisory Team and all parishioners. As always, we are interested in your thoughts on communications and initiatives that will help us in this effort. You can submit suggestions, comments, and questions about Partners by going to either Holy Rosary’s or OLG’s websites or filling out a comment card in church vestibules.

IMPORTANT NEWS

JOURNEY OF THE ELECT & CANDIDATES

  • For many months, catechumens (not baptized) and candidates (baptized) have been exploring the Catholic Faith. Their discernment has led them to decide that they would like to join the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. This Sunday we will celebrate the Rite of Sending with them, where they will be presented to the Archbishop at the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion at St. James Cathedral. The catechumens, who will become the Elect, will enter into the period of Purification and Enlightenment as they prepare for their baptism, confirmation and First Communion. They will also begin wearing purple robes when they come to church. The candidates will also begin their final preparation which includes celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is the entire parish’s responsibility to support and welcome them. One of the many ways you can do this is to become a prayer partner for one of them during the Lenten season. Next week you will have the opportunity to “adopt” one of them, praying for them every day and asking for God’s blessings and guidance. Your prayers make a difference!!
  • Our catechumens are: Andrew Alvarez, Jalen Alvarez, Jessi Barry, Varenna DeWaal, Trevor Dickey, Ben Flores Singer, Wyatt Haddock, Zoe Haddock, Soren Huebner, Megan Khazaal, Colin Lambert, Mia Olmsted, Kyler Padilla, Benjamin Sluyter, Jack Spenser, Austin Toth, and James Wallace, and Nora Watts. Our candidates are: Catherine Burt, Joshua Campbell, Alyssa Hulet, Jennifer Patano, Jacob Smith, Kate Wharton, and Kelly Yerian.

This weekend we will take up the Northwest Catholic Collection. Your support ensures that Northwest Catholic magazine is delivered six times a year, free of charge, to every registered Catholic household in Western Washington, and that its website, NWCatholic.org, is updated every day with local, national and international Catholic news. Northwest Catholic is an essential evangelization tool in the archdiocese, providing local stories of faith, inspiring columns from our bishops and information about what’s happening in the archdiocese. Thank you for your support of this ministry. You may donate online at our parish website

ADULT CONFIRMATION PREPARATION PROGRAM FOR OUR PARISH FAMILY begins on Tuesday, March 4 from 6:30-7:45 pm remotely. The Confirmation celebration will be scheduled in the Easter season. The sacrament of Confirmation completes our Catholic initiation and makes it possible for us to participate as godparents, sponsors, and other liturgical roles in our Church. Contact Helen, heleno@olgseattle.org , 206-935-0358

MEN'S GROUP TO PONDER ST. FRACIS OF ASSISI

The Men’s Spirituality Group will soon begin reading Donald Spoto’s acclaimed biography Reluctant Saint: The Life of Francis of Assisi. They will choose a weekly day and time that best accommodates participants’ schedules. If you are interested, please e-mail Michael Bunney (michael.bunney@outlook.com).

This month’s topic: “A JUBILEE YEAR: A TRADITION OF RECONCILIATION AND RENEWAL” Each month, our parish provides a monthly e-newsletter, "Catholic Update", which explores a key aspect of our Catholic faith or a current topic of importance to Catholics.

Love in Action: Immigration

Love thy neighbor, Love thy enemy

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops calls the American Catholic Church "an immigrant Church,''       one with an obligation to treat the stranger "as we would treat Christ Himself." But our country is in turmoil over immigration, with deep divisions, anger and distrust. Join us on Tuesday, March 11, at 6:30 p.m., in the OLG Pastoral Center, to reflect on this issue through the lens of Christ's core teachings to love our neighbor as   ourselves, and to love our enemies. Which is which, and which part is harder for you right now? We'll listen through structured discussion, help each other and pray together. Agreement not       required. Light supper will be served. For more information, contact Kelley at outreach@olgseattle.org.
