Weekly OLL News: January 29, 2020
Dear OLL Families,

Did you see the video of our students singing the old OLL favorite, “We’re the Lakers” as a surprise for their teachers? Or the picture of our 8th graders giving out yellow roses to teachers and staff at Monday’s assembly? How about the group shot of our resilient OLL Speech Team members, who came in an incredible 4th place at the Seattle Prep tournament, despite missing seven teammates out with illness?

All these and much more can be found on our OLL social media channels: Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Get rid of that fear of missing out - you can follow them all at (feel free to stop reading and click on these now!):

Today for Catholic Schools Week we celebrated our amazingly dedicated and talented teachers and staff. Thanks to our 6th grade parents for the after-school snacks and treats. At the Fulcrum Celebration of Light event last week, Archdiocese of Seattle Superintendent Kristin Dixon reminded the hundreds of people gathered of the single most impactful factor in a child's education - the quality of the teacher.

Thankfully, this is an area where OLL shines. There’s a strong element of trust when we drop off our kids with their teachers each day, that they will receive an excellent education not only of academic skills and habits of mind, but also of the heart and spirit. Church documents write that a “teacher does not write on inanimate material, but on the very spirits of human beings .” That’s a weighty responsibility. And a privilege we’re all blessed to take on - with you parents as our partners. (To read an obituary about the tremendous legacy and impact of a former OLL teacher, Nancy Duggan, click here .)

We hope to see many of you at the OLL Skate Night tomorrow (Thursday) evening at 6pm at Lynnwood Skate/Bowl. It’s a “No Homework” night! Fun will be had for all.

Thanks for your support in so many ways of our teachers and staff this Catholic Schools Week. We are ever-grateful.

Daniel P. Mullen
Principal

Illness Policy from the Handbook - Flu has hit OLL
Children who are ill must be kept home until they have recovered sufficiently to return to the regular school routine. General guidelines for keeping children at home would include:
  • Student should not return to school until the student has been treated with antibiotics as needed for 24 hours.
  • The student's temperature is normal for 24 hours without medication.
  • The student’s vomiting / diarrhea has stopped for 24 hours.
  • The student is exhibiting symptoms that require ongoing treatment, staff intervention and/or personal discomfort greater than what is typically dealt with by students /staff on a regular school day.

If your student is feeling ill, please keep them home so as to avoid spreading the illness to others in the school. Even if s/he is not exhibiting a fever, a student’s illness may make for an uncomfortable school day that could be best remedied by an absence from school.
Thank you for following the school policies.

OneOLL Catholic Social Teaching Stories Project Encourages Drawings, Paintings and Poems in addition to Written Personal Stories!
We are inviting all parishioners and students at and not at OLL School to write 500 word personal stories. We’re also inviting all the young and older in our parish and in our parish School to create a drawing, painting or poem based on one element of our Statement of Commitment and Action to Living Catholic Social Teaching. These will be added to our Jubilee Hall binder. Find the text of the Statement on cards on the tables in church and from Principal Daniel Mullen at the school. Submit your art, poem or 500 word personal story on one of the eleven elements of the Statement to  [email protected]  and we will add it to the binder.

Once monthly at all the Masses a writer, poet or artist will be featured. Make sure to indicate which element you are focusing on. Give at least your first name at the bottom and on a separate sheet give your full name and contact number and email.

Our goal is 100 OLL submissions. We invite you to read those recently submitted, including stories from eleven OLL School seventh graders and a few more from parishioners.
