Weekly OLL News: October 16, 2019
Message from Our School Counselor, Mrs. Katie Denniston

Dear OLL Families,

Why are boundaries set? When this question was asked this week to different classes, I received a variety of answers such as, “to keep yourself safe”, “so I know to stay inside the playground at recess so the school does not get in trouble”, “because my parents tell me to do so”. Helping our students understand boundaries from an early age benefits them and helps to guide them on knowing right from wrong, and from knowing comfortable situations versus uncomfortable situations.

I believe one of the most challenging boundaries kids face these days is in relation to technology. Helping kids, tweens and teens understand why boundaries are established in relation to technology can be tricky, as technology seems to be the norm everywhere we go.

We are very excited to be hosting Tammy Fisher, PhD, to speak at our Open House on November 14th for a parent education talk titled: “ Calm Clarity: Strategies to Support Your Child's Social/Emotional Well-Being in the Screen Age. ” Dr. Fisher is a well-respected author, school counselor, and educational trainer at schools across the country and Canada. She’ll speak about parenting with boundaries and strategies to support your children’s social and emotional well-being in the screen-focused world we are in now. We hope you will be there! Please plan to attend this parent education event, starting at 6:30pm in the MPR, with our Open House to follow.

Thank you for being your child’s best teacher on setting boundaries. It is a good feeling to be able to have open conversations with the classes about safety and boundaries where they are comfortable to share their family rules around safety. OLL is truly a wonderful and supportive community.
